Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is actively seekingOn-Call Archaeological Field Technicians who live within a commutable distance to our ESA office in Seattle, WA. This is a part-time non-exempt role working at least 30 hrs. per week. More hours may be available/week on a case-by-case basis

Who You Are



  • You are an effective team member experienced in archaeological monitoring, surveys, and documentation of archaeological resources following applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements. You live in the Seattle areato support local work. This role may require frequent overnight travel up to 50% time, sometimes for extended periods of time (up to 2 weeks at a time)based on current project demands. Some overnight and weekend work may be required.
  • You hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology or related field. You have a demonstrated ability to use app-based software for field recordation and mapping.
  • You are familiar with working on active construction sites and knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region and have a 0-5 yearsprofessional or relative academic field experience in the Northwest Region. Strong preference given to candidates with 2+ years professionalor relative academic field experience in the Northwest Region.
  • You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; and are able to lift at least 40 pounds. Candidates should be confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas. Additional field work may include hiking long distances, boating, helicopter rides, & driving ATVS (4x4). Some night and/or weekend work may be required.
  • You will participate in compliance monitoring and reporting activities for on-going construction projects; you will work near heavy equipment.
  • Qualified candidates must possess a valid driver's license with a clean DMV record.



What You Will Do for ESA

The seasonal Archaeological Field technicians can demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring and familiarity working on construction sites, coordinating with construction personnel, and interacting with Native American monitors. Successful candidates will fulfill the following duties:



  • Monitor construction activities and identify archaeologicalresources;
  • Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel;
  • Write and maintain written daily surveys, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.


Please note:



  • Project site travel mileage will be provided to job location from the ESA Seattle office
  • Overnight lodging may include single occupancy hotel room,campground or RV lot at the discretion of the candidate/employee. Candidates will be responsible for making these reservations and submitting receipts in compliance with the project contract. Staff will not be asked to share lodging accommodations with others unless project specific requirements are in place and in this case, candidates will be able to decline the assignment.
  • Dependent on the contract: Expense reimbursement or full per diem.
  • We do not provide food, laundry services, or vehicles unless project specific arrangements have been made in advance

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position, the range is approximately as listed based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including but not limited to an individual's related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.
