General Summary of Position:

The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) provides assistance to faculty and research staff in all aspects of applying for, accepting, and managing external research funding. The Grants and Contracts Administrator position facilitates the review and submission of proposals for research funding in accordance with sponsor and university policies, processes grant awards and contracts for research funding, and initiates account set up and non-financial post award management of sponsored awards. This position and office work closely with the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation's offices, as well as other administrative units across the campus and throughout the University system to provide efficient and effective research administration support services to the UMass Lowell research community.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):



  • Bachelor's Degree plus five years of experience* in grant and contract administration; knowledge of federal, state & general funding agency rules and regulations; knowledge of Uniform Guidance.
  • Working knowledge of pre-award lifecycle, inclusive of budget development and review, but focused on proposal review and submission in institutional (home grown or electronic research administration ("eRA") solutions) proposal routing forms/tools and systems, as well as Federal proposal portals such as Grants.gov, Research.gov, NSPIRES, ASSIST, ProposalCentral, Workspace, JustGrants, etc.
  • Experience in pre-award grant and contract administration in a higher education or non-profit setting
  • Experience with National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Energy and National Institutes of Health proposals and awards
  • Experience using indirect cost rates in proposal budgets
  • Experience with multi-year budgets with separately priced tasks
  • Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills in order to interact with faculty, staff and individuals outside the University
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure of deadlines; strong math skills.


*Will consider candidates with high school diploma or GED/equivalent and 10 or more years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with standard contract terms
  • Experience with PeopleSoft financials
  • Experience with institutional electronic research systems (i.e. Kuali, Cayuse, InfoEd)
