Job Purpose

The Control Systems Engineer - supports the development, integration, verification and certification of electronic Control Systems including Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS), Auto-Throttle (AT), Emergency Auto-Land (EAL), etc.; supports the analytical control system design, analysis and associated simulation. This position is for a Control System Cognizant Engineer who will be responsible for the Control Systems life cycle.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Design, development and certification of Control Systems, and more specifically AFCS including: architecture development, system requirements development, system integration, system safety, system qualification, system integration testing (hardware-in-the-loop) and system issues resolution.
  2. Analytical design and development of closed loop Control Systems including: control topology/architecture and control law structure development, control system gain design and analysis, linear and nonlinear simulation infrastructure development to support control system design.
  3. Defines Control Systems integration, verification and validation (V&V) testing requirements, test procedures and supports laboratory, ground test and flight test activity as required.
  4. Execution of Automatic Flight Control System integration, Safety-Of-Flight, and certification testing.
  5. Defines and reviews control systems requirements, ICDs, electrical drawings, test plans, system safety documentation and system performance analysis.
  6. Resolves problems from the development, certification, production, and field support activities.
  7. Review System Safety documents, including Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), System Safety Assessment (SSA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  8. Interface with Avionics Supplier System Engineers, DERs and Flight Test to support integration activities.
  9. Assist Customer Support and Production as needed.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  1. Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or other related field required.
  2. At least 7 years of direct experience as a control systems engineer in actual aircraft development programs (Part 23 or 25) is beneficial, preferably in the area of flight critical systems, including requirements development, design, analysis, integration, testing and system troubleshooting and control problem solving experience. AFCS or electronic flight controls experience is desirable.

  5. System troubleshooting and debugging skills, both in the lab and in the actual aircraft.
  6. Working knowledge of control systems, including high integrity and fail-operational system architectures and data bus protocols.
  7. Fluency in systems requirements development and management.
  8. Working knowledge of modern control design methods (such as LQR) and aircraft stability and control analysis.
  9. Fluency in Mathworks MATLAB/Simulink.
  10. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel,Outlook, etc.).
  11. Working knowledge of FAA & EASA certification requirements, including airworthiness and operational requirements preferred.
  12. Experience with Engineering process tools for Requirement Management, Defect Tracking, Configuration Control, Version Control (DOORS, JIRA, Bitbucket, SourceTree) and PLM tool (TeamCenter, etc.) is

Working Conditions

  1. Incumbents may be routinely exposed to equipment operational noise heat-cold-dust, and/or aircraft equipment, parts, or fuel odors.
  2. Incumbents may be required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, move, reach, or stretch for prolonged time periods with no restrictions, as required by job duties.
  3. Work in a safe and professional manner while adhering to all regulatory requirements (FAA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, State, and Federal regulations, etc.).
  4. Read, hear, speak, and see with no restrictions, as required by job duties.
  5. Comprehend and adhere to management directions and/or safety instructions with no restrictions.
  6. Effectively communicate in Business English language.
  7. Pull, push, carry, lift, or move items up to 10 lbs. throughout the work shift without assistance, as required by job duties.
  8. Pull, push, carry, lift or move materials/people/items/equipment weighing up to 50lbs or more during the work shift, with the use of Company provided "reach assistance technology" or "movement assist technology" (fork-lifts, pallet jacks, pulleys, dolly's, robotics reach equipment, people movers etc.), as required by job duties.
