Under the supervision of the Mohs Surgeon, the Mohs Lab Supervisor, and the Dermatology Administrative Director, the incumbent will focus on the unique methods of the Mohs laboratory frozen tissue process which includes grossing and mapping; freezing, embedding, and cutting en face sections to obtain 100% margin control; and use of special stains to highlight skin cancer cells - including immunohistochemistry on frozen sections for melanoma. The incumbent must possess advanced experience and be able to produce consistent, high-quality slides which allow for complete peripheral and deep margin assessment for all tumor types and anatomic locations.


The incumbent will be responsible for preparation of materials, proper labeling and storage of slides, and ensuring a safe environment in the lab according to OSHA standards and UCSF policy. The incumbent will perform established duties according to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) and guidelines. Additional responsibilities will include rooming and intake for patient visits/procedures and Mohs scheduling as needed.
The incumbent must be able to work independently as well as contribute to the goals of a team environment. They must be able to troubleshoot workflow and equipment issues and understand when appropriate to escalate issues. The incumbent must adhere to all Hospital and University policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Ability to work at multiple UCSF sites is a requirement. Time and type of assignments may vary upon department needs.

The Mohs Surgeon and Mohs Lab Supervisor will observe and review the incumbent's technical performance, which includes quality of sectioning and staining. The Mohs Supervisor will review daily record keeping, teamwork, communications, and other non-technical skills.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Associate degree in any field or at least 60 semester academic hrs, w/ a combination of 12 semester hours of biology or chemistry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 1 year of Mohs Technician laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of CLIA laboratory protocol, as well as CAP, The Joint Commission, and general laboratory safety standards.
  • Knowledge of infection control, ergonomic, chemical waste, and glove fit regulations and all other General Safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods for operating laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize specimens and tasks to produce a high-quality product in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Skills in accurate computer data entry in laboratory information systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be detail-oriented and can work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language through written and oral communication methods.
  • Ability to read technical documents, policies, procedures, and other materials related to work.
  • Ability to learn, retain, and apply new information related to the job.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize work and records with attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to facilitate and adapt to change, including but not limited to changes in protocols and work schedule when required.
  • Ability to recognize the needs of own area of responsibility as well as the laboratory.
  • Manual dexterity to perform technical duties/tasks.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work with frequents interruptions.
  • Knowledge to know whether a poor stain can be "corrected."
  • Knowledge and ability to do a variation of special stains, such as Mart-1 and Sox-10 for melanoma.
  • Ability to be punctual and maintain a satisfactory attendance record.
  • Ability to communicate with mutual respect and consideration for diversity among individuals.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge and ability to do IHC stains such as CK7 for extramammary Paget's disease and pancytokeratins for squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Active membership to American Society of Mohs Histotechnology and National Society of Histotechnology.
