Overview

The Structures/Hydraulics Section at the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is hiring for two Civil Engineers. The primary function of Structures/Hydraulics Section is the development and design of project plans, specifications, and estimates for projects that focus on bridges/culvert/retaining walls and much more across the state.

Examples of work may include, but are not limited to:

  • Hydraulic Design - Perform hydraulic analysis for bridges and culverts using One- and Two-Dimensional hydraulic modeling software. Simulate temporary and permanent flow conditions under different storm events, including peak discharge rates and evaluate the potential for surface water flooding. • Bridge Design - Design and analyze various structural elements of bridges, including superstructures, substructures, foundations, and retaining walls, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • CAD Software - Bridge design engineers utilize CAD software extensively throughout the design and construction phases. CAD software allows engineers to create detailed digital models of bridge structures, roadway approaches, and channel work. Engineers can use these digital models to visualize designs in 3D, make precise measurements, and analyze various design options.
  • Scoping Analysis - Involves evaluating initial design concepts, collaborating with stakeholders to meet regulatory requirements and standards, and providing cost estimates. Additionally, it entails identifying potential risks and challenges associated with different scoping approaches, such as environmental impacts, permitting requirements, and technical constraints.
  • Collaboration - Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, civil engineers, environmental engineers, and transportation planners, to integrate bridge designs with overall infrastructure projects
