Symetra's Internship Program for Summer 2025 is entirely remote - all interns will learn and work in a virtual setting. The internship duration is 12 weeks.

About the role

As the Investment Reporting and Business Intelligence Intern you are a key participant in the Symetra's investment accounting close and reporting cycle. You'll be an impactful member of our finance team responsible for transforming large amounts of investment data and other information into presentations and tools that tell the story of Symetra's portfolio.

The team is responsible for completing portfolio valuation and performance measurement, analyzing company results for both internal and external parties, providing support to the investment front office and contributing to projects within the finance department as needed. You will have the opportunity to learn and produce those tasks. You have experience with BI tools or a willingness to learn new technology to provide additional insight for portfolio management teams and reporting. You are interested or have experience with understanding the fundamentals of investment accounting and reporting requirements, with an ability and interest to take on complex tasks while continuously building your skills and knowledge.

Symetra Investment Management (SIM) was established in 2019 and is a subsidiary of Symetra who is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Life of Japan. SIM enables Sumitomo to invest in the U.S. markets and to expand in-house asset management capabilities. SIM is also an SEC-registered investment advisor providing third party investment management to institutional clients.

Your opportunities

• Assist with producing recurring investment reports timely, accurately, and completely, including monthly portfolio summaries (risk package); reporting for the parent company, clients, daily front office, and board of directors (BOD); and financial results and investment committee slides.
• Help transform existing processes in Excel into new BI tools such as PowerBI.
• Support the investment performance function and help adhere to, and maintain, procedures that further GIPS-compliant performance results.
• Develop new investment reports, as needed, to gather the impact of current market events or fulfill ad hoc requests.
• Translate large datasets into meaningful analysis for a wide audience.
• Support the investment month-end close and reporting cycles.
• Partner with team members to improve processes and workflows with an emphasis on building value, transparency and sustainability.

Your education and experience

• Working towards a bachelor's degree in Finance, Management Information Systems, Data Science or Computer Science
• Preferred understanding of investments, including fixed income asset classes, derivatives and alternative investments
• Experience in PowerBI, SQL, stored procedures, relational databases, and/or data warehousing
