TheLeclercLaboratory at the University of Virginia, Department of Anesthesiology, seeksapplications foraLab and Research Technician 1 or 2, Applicants will be considered for a Lab and Research Technician position 1 or 2based on the degree of their prior education and laboratory experience. Clinical and Basic Science Research are an essential part of the mission in the UVA Department of Anesthesiology. TheLeclercLab focuses onelucidating the mechanisms for the clearance ofneurotoxic metabolites from the brain following hemorrhagic stroke.Normally, blood is not present within the brain aside from that which is contained within the vasculature.When bleeding occurs,extravascular red blood cells become unstable and release a myriad of neurotoxic molecules.The glymphatic pathway is a special clearance pathwaywithin the brain thatfacilitatesbulk flow washout of moleculesto the periphery. This research focuses on how various anesthetic paradigms modulate the glymphatic pathway toaugmenttheclearance of neurotoxic metabolites after hemorrhagic stroke. The experiments proposed utilizecutting-edgein vivoandin vitrotechniquesandrepresent a unique research niche that bridges the fields of Anesthesiology and Neuroscience.This position willrequire the ability to performboth routine lab functions as well as more advanced neuroscience proceduresand protocols.Routine lab functions may include managing the mouse colony, genotyping, making solutions, ordering labsupplies,maintaininginventories, and organizing andmaintainingrecords and lab SOPs. Advancedneuroscience procedures may include performing stereotaxic and other survival surgeries on mice, two photonmicroscopy,complex brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocols, administering pharmaceutical agents to mice,neurobehavioral monitoring of mice, andperforming sectioning, histology, western blotting,andother forms ofmicroscopy. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. This position will report to the Principal Investigator (PI). All team members meet individually with the PI at least weeklyto summarize their progress and troubleshoot their projects. They will alsowork closely with other lab members and team members within the Departments of Neuroscience and Anesthesiology. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. This is a Non-Exempt level, benefited position. Physical Demands: This position is located in Charlottesville, VA This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Alsorequires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. Anticipated Hiring Range: $37,000 - $47,000, based on education and experience.
