DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role entails a range of technical responsibilities focused on the oversight, assessment, and coordination of communications related to real-time traffic conditions at a 24-hour Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC) operated by the Department of Transportation. The individual in this position is tasked with monitoring and evaluating both emergency and non-emergency traffic situations, utilizing various sources such as police scanners and camera feeds to confirm and identify traffic incidents. This includes verifying incidents with relevant authorities, disseminating information via two-way radios and telephones, assessing the situation to determine appropriate actions, and recommending alternative traffic routes. Additionally, the employee is responsible for entering data into computer systems, including the Road Condition Reporting System (RCRS), and operating Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, which encompasses ATMS, ramp metering, and traffic signal software. The role also involves coordinating the dispatch of Freeway Service Patrols (FSPs) and collaborating with Department personnel and other emergency management agencies. The work is conducted independently within established guidelines, with oversight from the RTMC Floor Supervisor to ensure technical accuracy and thoroughness.

Furthermore, the employee is expected to possess a comprehensive understanding of ITS field device equipment, which includes but is not limited to CCTV, Changeable Message Signs (CMS), ramp meters, traffic signals, and travel time systems. This knowledge extends to the maintenance requirements associated with these ITS devices, as well as the related cabinet equipment and communications networks.
