Sterile Processing Education Coordinator, Javon Bea Hospital - Riverside campus

- 80 hours / 2 weeks

- Variable Day Shift Hours

- This position will also support the Mercyhealth Harvard Hospital and the Mercyhealth Crystal Lake Hospital locations.

The Sterile Processing Education Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing a standardized program of orientation, continuing education, and competency assessment for all partners who reprocess reusable medical devices throughout Mercyhealth. The incumbent will ensure that training and operating standards at all locations comply with regulatory agency standards. The incumbent will cultivate and nurture positive and collaborative relationships with internal customers, including infection prevention staff, all partners who perform reprocessing, and their leaders. This position also reviews quality processes and practices, especially at Mercyhealth clinics, to ensure regulatory compliance. The position includes frequent travel among various hospitals and ambulatory/outpatient facilities.


Responsibilities

  • Completes at least 18 credit hours of continuing education per year.

  • In conjunction with the Sterile Processing System Manager, serves as the subject matter expert on cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, transporting, handling, and storing reusable medical devices for all Mercyhealth locations.

  • Ensures that any training or audits are based upon instructions, policies, and operational performance expectations of industry standards, regulations, and best practices, including, but not limited to, AAMI, AORN, APIC, ASGE, CBSPD, CDC, FDA, HSPA, OSHA, SGNA, and The Joint Commission.

  • Plans, develops, and implements system-wide sterile processing and high-level disinfection (HLD) education plan and training curriculum for onboarding and ongoing staff development in hospital and clinic settings. Develops and implements a "Train the Trainer" methodology system-wide. In conjunction with site leadership, tracks new hires' training progress, signs off, and maintains orientation and competency checklists. Assist site leadership with annual competency assessment for all staff who perform sterile processing and/or HLD throughout Mercyhealth.

  • Actively assists with hands on training and onboarding of new partners.

  • Identifies learning needs through various methods, including observation, occurrences, staff meetings, unit-based data, and partner input. Reviews and revises education programs as necessary to ensure staff receives updated information.

  • Develops, reviews, and updates system-wide policies and procedures regarding sterile processing and HLD and provides appropriate education to staff. Conducts audits to monitor compliance with policies and procedures and the manufacturer's written instructions for use (IFU) for instrumentation, equipment, and other products used.

  • Collaborates with SPD System Manager, SPD System Director, Infection Prevention staff, and hospital and clinic leadership to develop and implement quality assurance and performance improvement activities related to quality, service, and workflow. Clinics that have to reprocess items onsite (ENT Scopes, GYN probes) should perform an audit at least quarterly.

  • Works in a technician role to support staff shortages or increased volume and maintain competency.

  • Oversees quality monitoring processes and prepares monthly QA summary reports.

  • Be educationally proficient to teach the sterilization class. Serves as an expert in the use of SPM instrument tracking system

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • A minimum of three years of sterile processing or OR/surgical technician work experience.

  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Either CSPDT or CRCST required

  • CIS Certification through the HPSA is required within 12 months of employment .

  • CER or CFER certification through the HPSA is required within twelve months of employment.

  • CHL or CSPM certification through a nationally recognized Sterilization organization is preferred, but not required.

LEVEL OF SUPERVISION

  • Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; employee adherence to annual education and certification requirements.

  • Assignments are generally received in the form of results expected and due dates. Work requires a fair amount of independent judgment and decision-making.

SUPERVISES

  • Indirectly supervises Sterile Processing Technician.

  • Supervisory responsibilities are conducted in accordance with directives of management, the organization's policies, and applicable laws.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear, stoop, and crouch; use hands to feel, handle, and manipulate; lift up to 50 pounds; and push and pull up to 200 pounds. Specific sensory abilities that the employee must rely on include color vision, near vision, depth perception, and sense of hot and cold.
