The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Sign Shop Technician - Traffic Engineering Division.

The Traffic Engineering Division is seeking a highly skilled and reliable Sign Shop Technician (SST). This SST is responsible for fabricating traffic control signs through the use of sign-making computerized programs and equipment. The main tasks performed include sending digital files to vinyl cutting plotters, weeding and applying vinyl material on aluminum blanks, and using different sized squeegee roll applicators. The ideal candidate must be able to do the following: accurately take measurements using inches/feet; distinguish between various colors and materials, lift and move items weighing in the 20-50+lb weight range - with or without a reasonable accommodation; stand for prolonged periods of time; view and distinguish small details in order to weed vinyl materials; withstand routine and frequent exposure to vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors; and perform basic computer functions using Microsoft Office Suite. Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
General Description
Makes signs as directed in the Sign Shop.
Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires two (2) years in layout and fabrication of signs and frames or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses
None.

Preferences
  • Vocational/Technical School Certification in Graphic Design or closely related field
  • Associate's Degree or higher in Graphic Design or closely related field
  • 3M or Avery Certification
  • At least two (2) years of experience in vinyl sign design and/or fabrication
  • At least two (2) years of experience using graphic design and/or vector software
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and/or Standard Highways Signs (SHS)
  • At least one (1) year of experience using work-order tracking software

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Acquires assignments from supervisor and sets up project via computer to design layout, size, color, location, mounting, and material needed; cuts material and sends to sign shop for fabrication with instructions.

Orders supplies when needed for sandblaster, paint, glue, vinyl, stencil, ink, and replacement parts; prepares paperwork regarding sign shop, work orders; maintains equipment by keeping plotters and printers clean and operational.

Works with installers to distribute signs to be installed for the day; fabricates all signage from work orders for the day, then closes work orders; prepares sign blanks as to cover all blanks with reflective sheeting and trim; creates sign layouts drawings and gathers additional information for accurate job completion.

Performs related work as assigned.
