JOB OVERVIEW:

The Procurement Senior Manager for Co-Manufacturing is a key member of the Procurement team, reporting directly to the Director of Global Procurement. This role oversees all of Blue Diamond's co-manufacturing operations (both domestic and international and including current and potential/new co-manufacturing partners. At a high-level, the role includes the day-to-day management of co-mans; the commercialization process of new products at current/new co-mans; the overall co-manufacturer sourcing/selection process including contract negotiation; and the development and execution of the co-man category strategy (domestic and international) for Blue Diamond. As the Procurement organization at Blue Diamond Growers is on a journey to create a "best-in-class" sourcing organization, this role is critical in delivering on that mission. This is a very strategic and cross-functional role that supports a large portion of our company's products' manufacturing and innovation process. Additionally, the Senior Manager has one direct report (Procurement Manager - Co-Manufacturing), who will assist in managing a portion of the co-manufacturing partners.

Management of the co-manufacturing category will include everything from, but not limited to, leading the development and execution of a category strategy, leading supplier relationship management (including quarterly business reviews, scorecards, etc), creating should-cost models, negotiating contracts, executing RFPs, developing a risk mitigation plan, collaborating on innovation of new products with marketing and R&D, managing quality, cost, and service performance, leading continuous improvement projects, materials management, deploying and utilizing new procurement technology, implementing and tracking cost-savings initiatives, and calculating the total cost of ownership (TCO).

The person in this role should have good knowledge and experience of strategic sourcing; negotiating contracts; the management of co-manufacturer partners; manufacturing and quality processes; cross-functional collaboration; and leading/mentoring others.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Strategic Sourcing, Category Management, and Supplier Relationship Management:

  • Lead the entire end-to-end sourcing process for co-manufacturing of new innovation/products including developing co-man/supplier landscapes, sourcing new co-mans, completing financial/quality/other due diligence on potential co-mans, executing RFIs/RFQs/RFPs, qualifying and on-boarding new co-mans, negotiating contracts with co-mans, evaluating co-man performance using specific KPIs, and managing the overall co-man partnership from day-to-day.
  • Partner with the Legal team to draft, negotiate, and implement contracts with co-man partners
  • Develop specific KPIs for ongoing co-man performance tracking including for quality, delivery, cost, compliance, etc; develop and utilize tool/scorecard and process for tracking those KPIs with our co-mans
  • Develop Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) best practices and tools including supplier business review templates, supplier scorecards/KPIs, supplier segmentation, contract adherence, risk mitigation strategies, supplier forecasts, strategic collaboration with suppliers, etc
  • Conduct quarterly or bi-annual business reviews with co-man partners to review business updates, performance against agreed-upon KPIs, key projects, continuous improvement opportunities, etc
  • Contract compliance - ensure co-man suppliers adhere to the terms and conditions outlined in the contract
  • Lead the development and execution of category strategies for domestic and international co-manufacturing (including supplier landscape, short-and long-term strategy, savings opportunities, spend analysis, competitive analysis, capacity planning, etc) based on an understanding of the overall business' strategy, goals/objectives, and product/innovation roadmap
  • Analyze and recommend the best type of arrangement and contract for each partnership, such as toll vs turnkey manufacturing; and cost-plus, fixed-price, full-service, etc contracts
  • Develop risk mitigation strategy, including alternative sourcing options or secondary suppliers
  • Develop should-cost models, as needed, for the manufacturing of new products, with a deep understanding of the cost drivers
  • Foster strong mutually-beneficial relationships with co-mans to ensure high quality, service, and value
  • Conduct comprehensive market research to stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, and co-man/supplier landscapes
  • Leverage market intelligence to identify opportunities for cost reduction and competitive advantage

Day-to-Day Management of Co-Man Partners:

  • Manage day-to-day activities and overall relationship with co-manufacturing partners to ensure high-service levels and on-time production and on-time execution of new product launches; hold weekly calls with co-man partners
  • Escalate critical issues to leadership for resolution
  • Partner with the Procurement, Planning, Inventory Control, and Transportation/Warehousing teams to optimize production schedules and manage raw material/packaging and finished-good inventory levels at co-mans
  • Collaborate with internal teams to source and supply raw materials, delivered finished goods, and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Support QA with investigations into FSQA issues and corrective actions
  • Collaborate with QA, R&D, and Regulatory Affairs to maintain compliance and adherence to product specifications
  • Support QA and legal teams in recalls associated with co-manufacturing partners
  • Support Transportation team, as needed, in managing warehousing and shipping related services offered by co-manufacturing partners
  • Act as an escalation point for delivery, pick-up, and transportation issues at co-manufacturing partners.
  • Ensure the co-manufacturing partners follow the Blue Diamond shipping and routing guidelines
  • Track progress of active projects with current/potential co-man partners including quality issue resolution, RFPs, new item commercialization, co-manufacturer onboarding and qualification, cost-savings initiatives, and continuous improvement projects
  • Develop and implement cost-management strategies to ensure Bill of Material (BOM) costing aligns with inflation
  • Collaborate with the Finance team to track and analyze costs and cost-savings initiatives related to our co-man operations
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate supply chain risks to ensure business continuity

Innovation & Commercialization of New Products:

  • Partner with R&D, Marketing, and QA on innovation projects, including attending marketing's weekly commercialization meetings, finding and researching potential co-man partners, performing due diligence on potential co-mans, performing "make vs buy" analyses with finance, managing project timelines, and coordinating trials for qualification in order to meet the company's deadlines for new product launches
  • Collaborate with Finance and Marketing to analyze the P&L for new products
  • As needed, work with the Direct Materials Procurement team on ingredient/packaging pricing for new raw materials used at our co-man partners

Continuous Improvement and Cost-Savings:

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives at co-manufacturing partners
  • Identify and execute cost-saving opportunities for co-manufactured products
  • Evaluate the co-man's ability to bring new ideas, technologies, and processes that add value, reduce cost, etc
  • Implement best practices to enhance quality, cost efficiency, and service performance
  • Monitor industry trends and incorporate innovation solutions into co-manufacturing processes
  • Joint problem-solving - engage in collaborative efforts internally and with co-mans to address issues and/or to improve processes
  • Evaluate continuous improvement opportunities and conduct ongoing capability analysis as it relates to co-manufacturing operations

Sustainability:

  • As needed, work with the Sustainability and Government Affairs to collect information from our co-man partners for our sustainability metrics and reporting. Coordinate projects and contacts between our co-mans and these internal teams to accomplish Blue Diamond's overall sustainability goals.

Strategic Communication and Leadership:

  • Clearly communicate co-man activities and strategies to senior management
  • Lead the strategic sourcing process for co-mans including negotiations of contracts/supply agreements
  • Act as a leader within Procurement (as part of the Procurement Leadership team), within the Supply Chain group, and across the broader organization
  • Lead, manage, and mentor the "Procurement Manager - Co-Manufacturing" on your team. This includes working with them to establish their annual goals (business and professional development); providing feedback; reviewing and tracking progress on annual goals; and supporting and guiding them in both their day-to-day and strategic activities for the category. Further, it includes teaching and guiding them on the co-man selection process, performing due diligence on new suppliers, contract development/negotiation, development of KPIs and SRM tools, cost-savings, and true strategic sourcing best practices.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, business, economics or related fields. Master's degree or an MBA preferred.
  • 8 years (minimum) of procurement experience, especially strategic sourcing and as a manager
  • Experience in sourcing/managing co-manufacturer partners
  • Required in-depth knowledge of the sourcing process with strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent project management, cross functional leadership, and communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills to be able to analyze bids and data from a variety of data sources to help drive decision-making; drive cost-savings; and develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Extensive experience in driving and performing complex negotiations and a variety of deals/contracts
  • Ability to drive aggressive implementation plans and schedules
  • Must be able to problem-solve and handle multiple projects and stakeholder needs
  • Ability to handle challenging situations and discussions with suppliers/co-man partners while upholding Blue Diamond's position and also maintaining a positive relationship with the co-man
  • Ability to work efficiently
  • 15-30% travel required to visit new potential co-man partners, attend production trials, lead business reviews (may include international travel, but mostly domestic)
