Application Developer

Portland General Electric
United States, Oregon, Portland
Apr 22, 2025

At PGE, our work involves dreaming about, planning for, and realizing a smarter, cleaner, more enduring Oregon neighborhood. Its core to our DNA and we haven't stopped since we started in 1888. We energize lives, strengthen communities and drive advancements in energy that promote social, economic and environmental progress. We're always on the lookout for people passionate about leading and being a part of teams that are advancing innovative clean energy solutions that are also affordable and accessible to all.

Summary:

The Advanced Energy Delivery Technology Solutions (AEDTS) team at Portland General Electric plays a crucial role in advancing our clean energy future through smart grid technology. We operate in two key areas:

Horizontal - Supporting enterprise-wide initiatives through AWS Cloud Data Lake, API management, data science, applications, and data products.

Vertical - Powering specific AED applications such as the Outage Management System (OMS) and ARCOS Callout System.

This dual approach enables AEDTS to drive PGE's goals of decarbonization, electrification, and operational efficiency, while ensuring the stability of critical systems that support reliable service delivery.

Our team is seeking a highly motivated and talented AWS full-stack developer - preferably with utility data experience - to join our growing organization. In this role, you will play a critical part in developing data pipelines, modeling data, and building APIs on AWS and Snowflake-based data lake and data warehouse platforms. You will use your strong analytical and technical skills to align business data architecture with technical architecture, delivering scalable and secure data solutions.

You will also design, build, and maintain AWS-native applications and automation pipelines that enable smart grid innovation and cross-functional collaboration. This position requires both hands-on development and strategic thinking, as you contribute to the architecture and long-term evolution of PGE's cloud ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

Programming/Software Development (PROG):

  • Designs, codes, tests, corrects, and documents complex AWS-based programs, APIs, microservices, and scripts from agreed specifications and iterations using AWS-native services and tools (e.g., Lambda, API Gateway, ECS, Step Functions).

  • Develops Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) templates using CloudFormation or Terraform to automate cloud resource provisioning.

  • Develops scalable data pipelines, API integrations, and serverless applications supporting utility operations (Outage Management Systems, ARCOS Callout Systems, and enterprise data products).

  • Participates in reviews of own work and leads reviews of colleagues' work, focusing on AWS development best practices and utility system needs.

Application Support (ASUP):

  • Maintains application support processes for AWS-hosted and hybrid utility applications.

  • Ensures all support requests are managed according to agreed procedures, using AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and application management tools for troubleshooting and performance reporting.

  • Collects and analyzes system performance statistics to optimize cloud infrastructure for reliability, security, and cost efficiency.

Incident Management (USUP):

  • Prioritizes and diagnoses AWS-related incidents according to established ITSM (IT Service Management) processes.

  • Investigates causes of outages or system degradation in AWS environments and seeks prompt resolution; escalates unresolved issues when necessary.

  • Facilitates system recovery and documents resolved incidents for compliance and future reference.

Problem Management (PBMG):

  • Initiates and monitors actions to identify root causes and implement long-term resolutions for problems impacting utility applications hosted in AWS.

  • Determines fixes or preventative measures such as rearchitecting services for improved resiliency or security.

  • Assists in developing and implementing operational improvements based on problem trends.

Systems Design (DESN):

  • Recommends and designs cloud architectures and tools that meet the electric utility's business and operational needs, considering target environments, security, performance, and regulatory compliance requirements (e.g., NERC CIP, NIST).

  • Creates technical visualizations, architecture diagrams, and detailed AWS solution designs for review and approval.

  • Translates logical business requirements into physical cloud solutions, ensuring alignment with user needs and minimizing complexity.

Systems Integration (SINT):

  • Defines integration builds for AWS services and ensures successful integration with on-premises utility systems where needed.

  • Accepts developed software modules, configures AWS and hybrid hardware environments, and performs integration testing.

  • Conducts fault diagnosis on integration failures and coordinates resolutions across application development and infrastructure teams.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Certifications:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Typically requires five or more years of experience in a related field, such as:

    • Cloud application development (preferably in AWS and Snowflake)

    • Data engineering and API development in a cloud environment

    • Software development supporting electric utility operations or energy systems

  • Valid driver's license required.

  • Preferred: Experience with AWS-native services (e.g., Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, CloudFormation).
