Platform Engineer

The Berkeley Lab is hiring a Platform Engineer for the small team within ESnet's Systems and Software department. This role supports the engineering, implementation, and maintenance of ESnet's platform systems, including GitLab, Ansible, and Kubernetes. Key responsibilities include managing container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), supporting both on-premises and cloud services (e.g., Google Cloud), and collaborating with teams on platform development and deployment initiatives.

What You Will Do:



  • Lead development, maintenance, and lifecycle of Platform Engineering services and infrastructure.
  • Manage project teams to deliver solutions on time and within budget.
  • Design Platform Engineering services and solutions.
  • Propose improvements to systems management, infrastructure, scripting, templating, and automation.
  • Implement and manage DevOps practices to enhance collaboration and efficiency between development and operations teams.
  • Provide on-call operational support.



What is Required:



  • 8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree (or 6 years with a Master's degree, or equivalent).
  • Experience with scripting and templating (Python, YAML, Helm).
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (Python, Go, Java, Rust, JavaScript, TypeScript).
  • Experience managing Linux-based systems.
  • Expertise in containerization and orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker).
  • Experience with Kubernetes tools (ArgoCD, Helm) and cloud platforms (Google Cloud, AWS).
  • Proficient with Infrastructure as Code (Ansible, Terraform).
  • Expertise in CI/CD tools (GitLab, GitHub, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions).
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Strong independent and collaborative work skills.
  • Proven success in customer relationship management.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with Agile practices.
  • Ability to handle technical and interpersonal conflicts diplomatically.



Desired Qualifications:



  • Experience managing highly available relational databases (PostgreSQL, MariaDB).
  • Strong understanding of network engineering concepts and protocols.
  • Knowledge of security concepts (zero trust, federated identity).
  • Experience with Rancher Multi Cluster Manager and RKE2/K3s Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with developer portal tools (e.g., Backstage).
  • Proven project management skills, delivering projects on time and within budget.



Notes:



  • This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • The full salary range of this position is between $129,948.00 to $219,276.00 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $146,184.00 to $178,668.00 per year depending upon candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

  • Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework, or remote. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
