2025 Summer Intern - Bioinformatics and Computational Biology

Department Summary

At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) we have initiated an exciting journey to bring together and further strengthen our computational talent and capabilities by forming a new, central organization - gRED Computational Sciences (gCS). gCS is on a mission to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world. This position will be hosted by the Computational Biology & Translation department within gCS. Join us for an internship this summer.

The Opportunity

Within gCS, our group focuses on advanced computational research for development of cancer therapies, specifically in the field of cancer immunogenomics. We currently have an exciting internship opportunity available for highly motivated and academically equipped students. The internship will involve contributing to our research on identifying new targets for cancer therapies. This role offers hands-on experience in computational pre-clinical research. The ideal intern for this role should have a strong background in cancer biology and genetics.

  • The candidate will be responsible for developing and applying bioinformatics approaches in analysing multiomics, expression, or sequence data, depending on the candidate's strengths and interests.

  • The candidate will be responsible for documenting his or her efforts and code effectively such that colleagues will be able to replicate their efforts before and after their departure.

  • The candidate will be responsible for effectively communicating his or her technical and scientific findings in both smaller project meetings and larger group presentation formats.

  • More detailed project objectives will be tailored to the candidate's strengths and interests, and an ideal outcome for the project would be significant contributions to a robust bioinformatic pipeline of patent or publication quality.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Bioinformatics, Statistics, Biology, Genetics, Bioengineering, Computer Science or related fields

Required Skills:

  • The candidate should possess knowledge in human genetics or epigenetics, and should be familiar with genomics data, such as RNAseq or Riboseq data.

  • The candidate should be proficient in programming in Python, R, Julia, Perl, C, C++, and/or Java

  • Knowledge of Unix, preferably in an HPC setting.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary for this position based on the primary location ofCalifornia is $50 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
