Job Summary:

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is a public health laboratory whose mission is to improve and protect the human condition by providing accurate and precise testing, service, research and education. The WSLH vision is to be a global leader in improving quality of life through the advancement of science-based public, environmental and occupational health laboratory practice and policy. Somewhat unique to WSLH is its inclusion in a public university. WSLH resides within the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). This position will focus on translational research, bridging laboratory science with real-world public health applications.

-Identifies research problems and develops complex research methodologies and procedures
-Collects and analyzes complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision
-Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
-Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
-Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
-Supervises the day-to-day activities of the research unit
-Provides training and education to students in the laboratory
-Manages the biosafety training and documentation
-Serves as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing advanced level information and representing the interests of the lab
-Monitors program budget and approves unit expenditures

The Research Lab Manager will be responsible for overseeing the design, execution, and analysis of microbiological and mycological experiments in a research laboratory setting. This role includes direct supervision of lab staff, managing the lab's operational aspects, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and serving as a liaison to both internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in experimental design, data analysis, staff training, and administrative oversight.

Education:

Required
Master's Degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical or biological science

PhD in Microbiology preferred


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
-Minimum of two years of experience working in a microbiology laboratory.
-Proven experience designing experiments and developing assays.

Preferred Qualifications:
-At least two years of experience supervising laboratory staff.
-Experience presenting research data and collaborating with external partners.
-Knowledge or experience in mycology and related fields.
-Background in engineering, particularly in lab-related applications (e.g., equipment design).


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Work hours: 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 24 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding


Salary:

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
