The Department of English at Winston-Salem State University invites applications for a nine-month, open rank position (Assistant, Associate, or Full) in British Literature or African American Literature with a start date of August 2025. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a faculty advisor, mentoring students inside and outside the classroom, engaging in scholarly activities that lead to books or publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or teaching, facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences, and engaging in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams.
A distinguished professorship may be considered for applicants who have achieved national or international recognition for significant contributions to African American literary scholarship.
The Department of English offers a BA in English and minor programs in dramatic arts and African American literature. It also offers general education courses. Our innovative academic programs prepare students to assume leading roles in society, industry, and the academy. |

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in English or a related area with a specialization in British Literature or African American Literature. Expertise in any historical period or subspeciality is welcome.
ABD candidates will be considered if the degree is completed by August 2025.
Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to teach writing courses in general education and in the major. |

WSSU seeks a committed and engaged faculty member for the Department of English who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising
- Teach undergraduate English courses in general education and within the academic major via face-to-face, online, and hybrid approaches.
- Construct detailed course syllabi.
- Facilitate high quality, engaging instruction.
- Leverage various technologies (e.g., Canvas, EAB Navigate) to communicate regularly with students, monitor student progress, and provide feedback on student success outcomes.
- Engage with students during mandatory office hours each week.
- Serve as an academic advisor.
Scholarship and Creative Activity
- Maintain an evolving research agenda.
- Produce scholarly research that promotes the teaching and learning of the discipline.
- Facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national and international professional conferences and meetings within the discipline.
- Engage in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams.
Service and Engagement
- Attend departmental and College meetings consistently.
- Serve on departmental-level committees.
- Serve on College- and university-level committees.
- Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
- Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
- Serve on community-oriented committees, boards, and commissions relative to the discipline area.
