Position Overview


Primary Purpose of the Position
The Department of Communication and Media Studies invites applications for a 9-month Instructor of Applied Communication position with a start date of August 2025. Applications are encouraged by candidates with prior experience teaching courses in applied communication to culturally and linguistically diverse students at the university level. This is a one-year position to be reappointed annually, contingent upon performance and departmental needs.

The Department of Communication and Media Studies focuses upon the emerging digital forms of media in the 21st Century with emphasis on their significant effects to human and social communication. A greater opportunity to study purposeful communication on a local and global scale is provided by the department to give the students opportunities to produce innovative media products to increase and enhance global-intercultural awareness.

Department Required Skills
Faculty in the Department of Communication and Media Studies seek candidates with demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence in a diverse higher education setting and an ability to implement various technologies that engage students in the learning process. We are especially interested in candidates who focus on student success, student learning and student support as evidenced by their instructional delivery and professional background.

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree in applied communication, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Evidence of at least three years of successful teaching experience in the field at the college/university level and demonstrated ability to teach foundational oral communication courses in general education.
  • Demonstrable evidence of teaching undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Evidence of utilizing various technologies that engage students in the learning process.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
We welcome candidates with a demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy practices, social justice, and innovation.

  • Evidence of utilizing various technologies that engage students in the learning process.
  • Evidence of utilizing Adobe Suite applications to engage students in the learning process.
  • Teaching experience in communication theory, strategic communication, and rhetoric and cultural studies.
  • Proficiency in Adobe software, emerging technologies and social media applications.

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
Winston-Salem State University seeks committed and engaged full-time faculty members for the Department of Communication and Media Studies who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising

  • Teach a full load (4:4) of undergraduate applied communication courses and general education courses via face-to-face, online, and hybrid modalities.
  • Communicate effectively with students and monitor their academic progress through EAB Navigate and other student success management systems.
  • Construct detailed course syllabi.
  • Facilitate high quality, engaging instruction.
  • Engage with students during mandatory office hours each week.
  • Leverage various multimedia technologies to communicate regularly with students and provide feedback on student success outcomes.
  • Collaborate with faculty within the department, across the university, and at other institutions to create and facilitate learning opportunities in applied communication.


Service and Engagement

  • Attend departmental, College and university meetings consistently.
  • Serve on departmental-level committees.
  • Serve on College- and university-level committees.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
