Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Associate I - Atlantic County for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Under general direction of the Atlantic County 4-H Agent, Department of 4-H Youth Development, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, this 4-H Program Associate is responsible for providing professional leadership and support to the Atlantic County 4-H Youth Development Program, targeting youth in grades K-13 (one year out of high school) and related to all 4-H Mission Mandates: Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math ( STEM); Healthy Lifestyles; and Civic Engagement (4-H club and teen leadership).

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Plans programs, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs (including implementation and support of needs-based culturally and academically relevant programs that target underserved audiences).
  • Utilizes a variety of delivery modes (including 4-H clubs and community outreach programs).
  • Volunteers development and leadership (including recruitment, screening, training supervision and evaluation of volunteers).
  • Program marketing and public relations.
  • Supervises paid staff.
  • Creates and supports of needs-based culturally relevant programs that target underserved audiences.
  • Actively participates in appropriate departmental, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, University and County administrative functions.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in education, human/youth development, sociology, science, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Also requires two years related professional experience.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license; ability to successfully complete National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience or course work in youth development programming, volunteer management, working with diverse audiences, and/or collaboration/coalition building.
  • Experience in managing people and evidence of effective human relations skills.
  • Experience in public speaking and written business-level communication.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).
  • Experience in working with diverse audience/clientele - evidence of effective human relations skills and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse clientele.
  • Initiative and creativity - ability to start and complete a project with minimal supervision; self-directed.
  • Flexibility - ability to work daytime, evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Personal organization skills - the ability to set priorities and manage multiple job tasks.
  • Demonstrated computer skills.
  • Selected candidate must agree and authorize the University to conduct a complete background investigation.

Equipment Utilized

  • Equipment related to teaching (laptop, LCD projector, VCR, Slide Projector, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of current and changing electronic technology.
