What you will do

  • Maintain, enhance, validate, and apply TEP's generation dispatch model (Aurora) for the purpose of supporting the Department's responsibilities described below.
  • Maintain and enhance existing Excel workbooks for purposes of collecting and preparing input data for Aurora.
  • Maintain, enhance, and apply Excel workbooks and other tools such as Power BI to summarize Aurora results and combine them with other data to provide to senior management, utility regulators, and customers.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or Economics or related field.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with production cost modeling software (Aurora) preferred.

Position Description
The Department is responsible for providing the vision and leadership for the development of the Company's resource plans. This includes refined assessments of resource needs and subsequent evaluation of commercial proposals to satisfy those needs; analysis of wholesale market opportunities; short-to-mid-term fuel use and wholesale forecasts for purposes of financial planning and determining fuel adjustment clauses on customer bills; avoided cost analyses for various regulatory filings; system modeling and scenario analyses to determine appropriate fuel hedging and other risk management strategies; contributions to rate case and other regulatory proceedings; evaluating costs, benefits and other impacts of participating in emerging regional markets; providing input on transmission planning; and supporting the company's sustainability goals by providing strategic insights and assisting with reporting metrics. Will assume and contribute to a number of these or related Department responsibilities.

Position-Related Responsibilities

  • Maintain, enhance, validate, and apply TEP's generation dispatch model (Aurora) for the purpose of supporting the Department's responsibilities described above.
  • Maintain and enhance existing Excel workbooks for purposes of collecting and preparing input data for Aurora.
  • Maintain, enhance, and apply Excel workbooks and other tools such as Power BI to summarize Aurora results and combine them with other data to provide senior management, utility regulators, and customers with recommendations and other insightful and actionable information pertaining to the Department's responsibilities.
  • Document data sources, methods, and procedures used in the analyses above.
  • Draft memos, reports and presentations to effectively communicate the complex issues, analyses, results, and recommendations described above. Develop a working knowledge of and become the Department's subject matter expert, as necessary or requested, on issues relevant to the Department's responsibilities. Such issues may include renewable energy generation and system integration; demand-side management programs to reduce or manage load; cost and performance of supply- and demand-side resources, including energy storage; environmental regulations and corporate sustainability goals; electricity market restructuring; gas/power system interactions; and stochastic-based risk assessment and resource adequacy determinations.
  • Evaluates scenarios that help position the Company to respond effectively to future business conditions while minimizing risk and uncertainties.
  • Actively participate in corporate and stakeholder meetings, public workshops and regulatory proceedings related to the topics and Department responsibilities above.
  • Works with other departments in support of major company-wide efforts, such as rate cases, regulatory filings, asset purchases and financial restructuring.
  • Manage contractor work assignments, if requested.
  • Serve as team leader on assignments or projects, if requested.
  • Travel may be required on a limited basis.
  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedure

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have knowledge of electric utility generation and transmission systems and their operation, such as load forecasting, fuel pricing and transport, generator dispatch and performance, distributed energy resources, wholesale power markets and transmission congestion, scheduling and planning.
  • Must have experience developing and applying 1) sophisticated spreadsheet models for financial or other data analysis, or 2) simulation models used for analyzing the bulk electric system.
  • Must have strong organizational and analytical skills, as well as problem-solving abilities.
  • Must have solid technical writing skills and ability to portray complex issues and technical results to audiences of various backgrounds.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience with scripting and programming is also desirable.
  • Must be able to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
  • Must be aware of when collective input is needed or appropriate to complete assignments or meet department responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Must be able to work effectively and cooperatively with individuals within and outside the Resource Planning Department, including consultants and members of the public.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent Combination of education and experience will be considered.

Planner l
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or Economics or related
Field.

Planner ll
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or Economics or related
field and two (2) years relevant experience.

Senior Planner
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or Economics or related
field and four years of relevant experience. Utility or resource planning experience preferred.

Lead Planner
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or Economics or related field and eight (8) years of relevant experience. Utility or resource planning experience preferred.

Pay Rate: Salary determined based on candidate's experience & qualifications.
