Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences

The midwifery service is embedded within the Maternal Fetal Medicine department and report to the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division Director. We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Director of Midwifery Services to lead our midwifery team and advance our mission of providing outstanding care.

Position Overview:The Director of Midwifery Services will oversee the midwifery service, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care to our healthy low risk patients as well as high-risk patients. This role involves strategic leadership, program development, and collaboration with other healthcare teams to enhance maternal and newborn outcomes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in midwifery practice, leadership experience, and a passion for improving patient care.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Leadership & Management:

    • Lead, mentor, and support a team of midwives, ensuring professional development and high performance.
    • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures in alignment with best practices and organizational goals.
    • Participate in departmental budgets, resources, and staffing meetings to ensure efficient and effective operations.
    • Responsible for hiring, evaluating midwifery staff, including implementing performance-improvement measures as appropriate.



  • Clinical Oversight:

    • Oversee and evaluate the clinical practice of midwives, ensuring adherence to standards of care and regulatory requirements.
    • Collaborate with obstetricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate comprehensive care for patients.
    • Address complex clinical cases and provide guidance on best practices.
    • Oversee midwifery lead programs such as Centering and collaboration with inpatient and outpatient directors.
    • Conduct teaching of medical students, residents and midwifery students.



  • Program Development & Improvement:

    • Lead the development and implementation of midwifery programs and initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes and service quality.
    • Monitor and assess program effectiveness and make data-driven recommendations for improvement.
    • Stay current with obstetrical trends, research, and advancements in midwifery and maternal care.
    • Develop and implement guidelines for midwifery practice in collaboration with Department of OB-GYN medical leadership.



  • Patient Care & Advocacy:

    • Ensure the delivery of compassionate, patient-centered care that respects individual preferences and needs.
    • Promote patient education and support throughout the obstetrical care process.
    • Address patient concerns and feedback to enhance overall satisfaction and experience.



  • Collaboration & Communication:

    • Foster strong relationships with patients, families, and the broader healthcare team to ensure seamless care delivery.
    • Represent the midwifery department in organizational meetings and community events.
    • Collaborate with external organizations and agencies to advance maternal and child health initiatives.




Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in Midwifery, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in midwifery practice, with at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of current midwifery practices, regulations, and evidence-based care.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Certification in BLS, NALS, ACLS. Current licensure and prescriptive authority.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $127,000-$333,700. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation. UCSF Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences has a total salary plan that uses National benchmarking standards to set salaries by subspecialty.
