What You'll Be Doing as a Lead, CNC Machinist:
Assigns and directs safe work activities of team members in the set-up, operation and quality assurance of all machining centers, associated processes and procedures.



  • Works to assure and promote a safe work environment.
  • Assigns and coordinates work of departmental team members to meet goals and demands in parts manufacturing - Turning Center or assigned production-related operations. Works across departmental lines to achieve optimal flow throughout the value stream.
  • Develops and maintains communications with all manufacturing and support groups and is effective with cross functional (internal customer/supplier) relationships.
  • Monitors the production process and department resources to assure accomplishment of production and quality targets. Audits and utilizes tools like Leader Standard Work to ensure compliance to standard work, problem identification and the follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Will take the lead on applying problem solving as well as coach others through operational performance gaps and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Sets the example for accepting change and is seen as a role model for the instigation and support of improvement.
  • Displays the ability to develop and lead effective teams to accomplish departmental goals.
  • In accordance with the L&S Core Values, coordinate, monitor, and support team members' Skills Development Program training while balancing workload requirements as needed; coach and mentor to standard work and future leadership.
  • Models and coaches continuous improvement, the use of the PDCA process, 5-S, TPM and other Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Prepares for and leads start of shift team meetings, communicates work assignments, attendance, machine status and performance to targets. Initiates and leads improvement of processes, standard work and participates in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ensures proper condition, operation, maintenance and development of departmental resources.
  • Makes all decisions within the framework of corporate ethical standards and policies.
  • May assume some supervisory tasks as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Skills and Experiences You'll Need as a Lead, CNC Machinist:



  • Understands, demonstrates and can coach others in Leupold & Stevens Company Core Values.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and two year trade school training or Journeyman Certificate in a related field. Multiple years of production machinery setup, operational and troubleshooting experience required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Effective and professional interpersonal communication and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrable understanding of blueprints interpretation/use and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GDT). Expert quality inspection and instrumentation use skills.
  • Shows potential leadership skills which include the ability to assign and direct the work of others; ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, and practices; train others in assigned areas of responsibility; encourage development of team members, and evaluate worker performance to established processes and report findings to the supervisor.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control equipment use and procedures.
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing methods and philosophy.
  • Demonstrable experience in problem solving on various multiple axis' CNC machine centers (Turning Centers, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of cutting tool use, conditions and geometry.
  • Strong "user" computer skills and experience. Capability to navigate and use internal systems, forms and programs as needed.
  • Strong ability to multi task, work with frequent interruptions and deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work significant overtime hours and possible shift changes at any time as needed.



Work Environment for a Lead, CNC Machinist:
Work takes place in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise and chemicals. Ability to use PPE. Ability to stand or sit for long periods; Good manual dexterity, fine motor skills, visual acuity, and ability to use full range of motion. Ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds with assistance.
