Junior Scientific Programmer/Data Scientist (Research 3)

About the Job

The Institute of Health Informatics (IHI) in the University of Minnesota is seeking a scientific programmer/data scientist to join the IHI Data Scientist Specialist (IHIDSS) team led by Dr. Ma. The IHIDSS team supports collaborative research to apply machine learning and statistical methods to solve real-world problems in biological and health sciences. Application areas includes but are not limited to: mental health, aging and longevity, diabetes, addiction, brain science, cancer, and health equity. The IHIDSS team also conducts original research involving machine learning theory development, algorithm development and benchmarking. The primary focus of the theoretical research are causal discovery and predictive modeling. This is a Researcher 4 classification position.

Duties/Responsibilities

Conduct Analytical Experiments (80%)

  • Construct datasets from various data sources for research.
  • Design and implement data processing and analysis infrastructure; Ensure the integrity and security of data, code, and analytical experiments.
  • Design, setup and run computational experiments to evaluate and benchmark cutting-edge machine learning algorithms.
  • Design, setup and run computational experiments to execute algorithms on various types of biomedical or healthcare related data.

Algorithm Development (10%)

  • Implement machine learning, statistical, data-mining, bioinformatics/clinical informatics algorithms.
  • Develop and modify software and demonstrations.
  • Create documentation for all software, code and experiments.

Publications and Presentations (10%)

  • Write or help prepare technical reports and/or publications.
  • Communicate and present analytical results to customers, scientists and clinicians.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications

  • B.A./B.S. in Computer Science/Math/Statistics/Physics/Informatics or related technical discipline plus at least four years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience in a research or technical environment to equal eight years.
  • Experience with Matlab or Python or R.
  • Experience with SQL or other database technology.
  • Experience writing code for complex computer programs independently. Please provide a link to samples of your code available online (Github or similar services).
  • Experience with basic machine learning or statistical methods.
  • Demonstrated/documented strong communication skills.

Additional Desirable (not required) Qualifications

  • Experience working with messy real-world data.
  • Experience in high-performance computing.
  • Experience working independently in a rapidly changing scientific environment.
  • Skills in data visualization.
  • Research experience in statistics/data science/related fields.
  • Experience publishing scientific papers in conferences/journals.
About the Department

The Institute for Health Informatics educates students and conducts research in the fields of biomedical and health informatics.

In that work it focuses on the design, use, and evaluation of information systems that support and improve healthcare while protecting the safety and confidentiality of those who receive that care. It is an interdisciplinary endeavor that encompasses work in a variety of settings from tertiary care hospitals to specialty clinics, mental health facilities, community clinics, nursing homes, and home care agencies.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $60k-$75k; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
