The A.A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), affiliated with Harvard Medical School, is one of the premier brain imaging research centers in the world.
The Research Technician (RT) works in a histology/histopathology laboratory directed by Dr. Jean Augustinack. The focus of our laboratory is mapping the healthy human brain and investigating Alzheimer's disease especially its preclinical phase. This position will concentrate on validating neuroimaging but also investigate the cellular pathology in the human medial temporal lobe in Alzheimer's disease with tissue-based methods.
The RT is responsible for preparing and processing human tissue specimens, performing histology and pathology protocols, manual MRI labeling, and running quantitative/semi-quantitative data analyses. The RT is responsible for detailed recordkeeping, making figures, and writing publications.

Education
Bachelor's Degree
Field of Study: Biology, Neuroscience, Zoology, or related field.

Experience
Prior laboratory experience, and knowledge in R/statistics

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include histopathology experiments on human brain tissue samples, itemized as:

  • sectioning tissue on microtome and mounting tissue on slides
  • performing histochemistry, histopathology and immunohistochemistry staining protocols
  • performing DNA extraction and PCR for AD genotyping
  • documenting data/tissue, microscopic evaluation for histology and histopathology
  • quantifying cell populations and pathology
  • analyze tissue and data quantitatively
  • contribute to and develop new protocols
  • use UNIX workstation in MRI
  • preparing laboratory solutions, ordering supplies, lab equipment
  • maintain a clean & safe lab environment
  • maintain documentation/record keeping, including a lab notebook, protocols, photography
