Job Description:

The Associate General Counsel - Claims & Employment is responsible for managing claims against the firm, third-party subpoenas and other forms of legal service, and employment-related matters. A Hybrid work arrangement is available for this position.

Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to the General Counsel.

  • Manage disputes in which the firm is or may become a party, including litigation, administrative proceedings (e.g., bar complaints) and investigations.
  • Assess risks and financial impacts of claims; advise the General Counsel and senior leadership on strategy and solutions.
  • Manage outside counsel.
  • Direct the collection of firm records and the participation of firm personnel in interviews and/or depositions.
  • Assist in insurance claims reporting and administration, including the annual renewal of the firm's professional liability insurance program.
  • Respond to third party subpoenas addressed to the firm.
  • Manage employment-related claims; advise Human Resources leaders on employment law, compensation, and benefits matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor Degree Required.
  • 10-15 years of relevant legal experience, in a combination of law firm and in-house settings.
  • Deep experience in litigation, including responsibility for independently managing complex disputes from commencement to resolution. In-house litigation management experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of legal malpractice law.
  • Strong understanding of employment law, New York and California law experience preferred.
  • Experience managing outside counsel.
  • Must be an active member in good standing in a state bar.
  • Exceptional analytical, independent decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to evaluate claims, assess likelihood of adverse results, quantify potential exposures, and develop strategies for defending or disposing or claims.
  • Complex project management skills and a proven ability to deliver high quality work.
  • Excellent legal drafting skills.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with senior attorneys and management on litigation-related matters, including risk assessments and strategy.
  • Ability to provide strategic legal advice aligned with business objectives.
  • Effective direction and management of outside counsel.
  • Collaborative leadership style, soliciting ideas and opinions from others in making decisions/plans or problem-solving.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Boston, MA: $185,094 to $274,816

In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
