JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

PSU SAFE-T Center Description:

The mission of the nurse-led SAFE-T Center model in the College of Nursing at PSU is to provide expert SANE training, mentoring and quality assurance to less experienced nurses conducting sexual abuse examinations in rural communities. The Center was launched in 2017 with grant support from the Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime (award # 2016-NE-BX-K001). The Center aims to solve issues of access and equity to high-quality care by not only building a model telehealth program that grows and supports the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) prepared workforce, but also by developing solutions that are sustainable long-term, so that victims will always have access to this level of care in their own communities. The Center is focused on three core values: 1) Person-centered care; 2) Evidence-based solutions; and 3) Sustainable partnerships. These values drive our service; to provide partner hospitals with 24/7 expert SANE live exam support and peer review to less experienced SANE nurses in underserved communities using advanced visual telehealth technology, and to provide ongoing training to support a stable cadre of SANE nurses where they are needed.

Company Description: SAFE-T System

The SAFE-T System is an innovative solution to the chronically unsolved issue of disparate SA care quality in most U.S. hospitals. Advancing this grant-supported academic discovery to a commercial enterprise is novel and will allow for broad adoption wherever there is need. This hub and spoke model will benefit from economies of scale and will demonstrate a sustainable solution to quality forensic care through effective cost, value, and growth metrics. Providing hospital access to a turnkey service to solve gaps in specialty SA care can substantially decrease disparities in care for vulnerable populations, and impact SA victims' healing trajectory and criminal justice outcomes.

The SAFE-T System company aims to be a for-profit business, independent from PSU, to allow for rapid growth and adoption of SAFE-T technology and the SAFE-T expert teleconsultation service model. The company may offer:

  • The SAFE-T System technology as an independent product, a stand-alone telehealth-enabled forensic photo-documentation medical device and secure, cloud-based back-end portal for storage and secure sharing of sensitive photos, videos, and written documentation.
  • The SAFE-T expert teleconsultation service. This is a comprehensive service that includes program consultation, initial training and continuing education for local nurse teams, implementation of the SAFE-T System technology, and 24/7 live telehealth expertise for every sexual assault consultation.

BusinessProblem

SAFE-T System Medical Device Development - We have made rapid and consistent progress in developing our solution for deployment to our current partner site hospitals. We continue to innovate and develop new software and hardware elements. Our technology is currently deployed to our partner hospitals and in use during examinations and whenever high-quality photography is needed.

Business Planning and Cost Structure Development- We engaged in customer discovery with our current hospital partner sites to understand the value proposition to develop the commercial side of delivering the service to be sustained beyond grant funding. This has resulted in hospital partners engaging in contract payments for service beyond grant funding.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST PURPOSE

The Business Development Professional will work directly with Dr. Sheridan Miyamoto, founder of the SAFE-T (Sexual Assault Forensic Examination Telehealth) System, to assess and plan for the SAFE-T System's exit from Penn State University into an independent company structure. The primary purpose of this engagement is to:

Evaluate the current state of the SAFE-T System within Penn State University's organizational framework. Analyze the potential benefits, risks, and challenges associated with transitioning the SAFE-T System to an independent company. Develop a comprehensive exit strategy that outlines the steps necessary to separate the SAFE-T System from Penn State University while maintaining its operational integrity and mission. Identify key stakeholders, both within Penn State University and external partners, who will need to be engaged in the transition process. Assess the financial implications of the exit, including current funding sources, potential investment needs, and projected financial models for the independent company. Review and advise on intellectual property considerations, ensuring all necessary rights and licenses are properly transferred or negotiated. Propose a timeline and roadmap for the exit process, including critical milestones and decision points. Recommend an appropriate corporate structure and governance model for the new independent entity. Identify potential challenges in maintaining existing partnerships and collaborations post-exit, and suggest strategies to mitigate these risks. Assist in developing a communication plan to inform all relevant parties about the transition in a clear and timely manner.

The Business Development Specialist will work closely with Dr. Miyamoto and other designated team members to gather necessary information, conduct analyses, and prepare recommendations. The final deliverable will be a comprehensive report and presentation outlining the exit assessment and proposed plan, which will be used to inform decision-making by Dr. Miyamoto and relevant university authorities regarding the future of the SAFE-T System.
