Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a major research university in the University of North Carolina System with student enrollment exceeding 29,000 students. The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (exss.unc.edu) supports an undergraduate program of over 1,400 undergraduate majors with three specialization areas (Exercise and Sport Science, Fitness Professional, Sport Administration); a Master of Arts graduate program enrolling ~60 students also with three specializations (Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration); and a doctoral program in Human Movement Science in partnership with the UNC-CH School of Medicine (hmsc.unc.edu). The mission of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science ( EXSS) is to discover, create and promote knowledge of human movement to improve the quality of life of individuals and society. The mission of EXSS is further enhanced through interdisciplinary cooperation and departmental faculty securing competitive extramural funding in the form of contracts and grants. These endeavors enable the department to advance knowledge and thus serve the state and nation.

The teaching, research, and service efforts of the EXSS Department are supported by an outstanding faculty and staff, which currently includes: 43 full-time faculty, 8 part-time (fixed term) faculty, 20 joint appointment / adjunct faculty, 8 emeritus faculty, 36 full-time EXSS staff members, and 16 full-time Campus Recreation staff members.
Position Summary
The Research Assistant will support multiple projects in the MOTION Science Institute and Sports Medicine Institute ( SMI) investigating the biomechanical and biological changes that occur following knee injury. This is a unique opportunity to gain significant experience in all aspects of human subjects research. We are seeking a research assistant with a desire to grow and expand their expertise, abilities, and impact on UNC research. The ideal candidate will work well as part of a team, in a highly collaborative fast-paced environment and will possess both problem-solving initiative and willingness to learn from and collaborate with colleagues. The Research Assistant will be trained to perform study protocols under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, including recruitment/enrollment, conducting study procedures, collecting, and maintaining data, tracking and reporting, and ensuring quality and accuracy of data.

Primary duties will include:

  • Assisting with day-to-day operations for research studies within MOTION and SMI : At The direction and under the supervisor of the Program Manager, this position will recruit, screen, consent and enroll participants to research studies, conduct study visits as part of a research team and collect data per study protocol including specimen collection and processing, perform study procedures, complete data entry, track study progress, maintain appropriate logs and records, and respond to data queries
  • Engage with study personnel, investigators, sponsors, and study participants to ensure smooth and efficient study progress.
  • Maintain good clinical practice and compliance with all regulatory bodies and study protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with study teams, principal investigators, and other faculty/staff/students
  • Assist with completing regulatory submissions for initial approval and required updates. Track study progress, meet deadlines, identify areas for quality improvements, recommend and implement improvements.
  • Complete required UNC training activities to maintain compliance (e.g., EHS, ITS).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Prior research experience with human subjects
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are necessary to obtain and exchange information with a variety of individuals
  • Knowledge of research best practices and regulations.
  • Significant attention to detail, organization, and the ability to successfully balance multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to work with a variety of people in a professional, effective, diplomatic manner, with excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and Teams.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience with UNC research systems/organizations
  • Experience with phlebotomy
