Summary: The Project Manager (Husbandry and Technical Manager) will oversee all veterinary technical and animal husbandry contract employees supporting the customer animal care and use program. This position ensures compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines, oversees personnel and operational management, and coordinates activities across containment and non-containment settings. Schedule: Variable hours include weekends, holidays, and emergencies as requested.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Personnel Management:
- Supervise and coordinate tasks performed by all contract employees in animal husbandry and veterinary technical roles.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, SOPs, and animal welfare standards.
- Plan and schedule employee shifts, including coverage for evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergencies.
- Operational Oversight:
- Assist in reviewing SOPs, preparing for oversight visits, and responding to inspection remarks.
- Ensure employees comply with occupational health requirements, including reporting absences, illnesses, or health changes.
- Manage equipment safety, certifications, and supply discipline.
- Technical Expertise:
- Assist with all animal care and veterinary technical tasks across containment and non-containment settings, including glassware/cagewash support and transportation services.
- Oversee animal studies preparation, including resource planning and acquisition.
- Reporting and Communication:
- Relay information between contract employees and TPOC/COR.
- Provide updates on operational status, animal census, and deliverables.
- Compliance and Certification:
- Enroll in and maintain compliance with CS-PRP and BPRP requirements.
- Ensure all contract employees pursue required certifications.
- Professional Development:
- Attend annual continuing education at no cost to the government.
- Travel locally to observe and develop novel approaches for animal care
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Expertise in identifying, assessing, and mitigating project risks.
- Skilled in developing and maintaining project schedules and timelines.
- Proficiency in allocating resources effectively and efficiently.
- Analytical skills to resolve issues effectively and efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse teams and individuals.
- Comfortable in the following work environment:
- Work involves standing, walking, climbing, and carrying materials up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to unpredictable animals, odors, and biohazards.
- Use of protective equipment, including BSL-4 suits and respirators, for extended periods.
- Risks include exposure to infectious agents, autoclave burns, and skin irritants.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science, Biology, Zoology, Laboratory Animal Science, or a related discipline.
- LATg and/or CMAR certification (required within 12 months unless exempted by TPOC and COR).
- Enrollment in Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) within one month of start date.
- Enrollment in Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) within one month of start date.
- Minimum six (6) years of veterinary technical and/or animal husbandry experience in research settings, specifically with non-human primates (NHPs).
- At least three (3) years of experience managing teams of personnel.
- T3 investigation (NACLC/ANACI is acceptable if completed within 5 years prior to enrollment). A favorably adjudicated SECRET security clearance eligibility, with no access to classified, is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Laboratory Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Animal Management, or Business Administration (MBA).
- Experience in ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 settings is highly desirable.
- Experience with rodents, swine, rabbits, and ferrets in research is highly desirable.
- Good Laboratory Practice experience is desirable.
The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000 annually.
