The Department of Revenue is excited to welcome a Tax Examiner 1 who is eager to develop the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to review and examine tax returns and other essential tax related duties. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Tax Examiner 1, you will be responsible for the examination, processing, proper allocation of tax payments and credits, and review of correspondence in response to individual tax notices. You will learn how to review internal and external resource materials to assist with reviewing and processing returns and correspondence and review correspondence received in response to individual tax notices sent and how to adjust the return accordingly. You will also learn how to search for misapplied payments in the computer tax system and apply them appropriately, examine and mathematically verify individual tax returns and schedules for accuracy, and verify those amounts carry over to the correct line on tax returns. Additionally, you will learn to initiate transfer transactions of payments, returns, and credits to make corrections when errors are identified in correspondence received in response to individual return notices and how to complete work items received from other bureaus. Other duties will include:

  • Learning how to make and receive telephone calls from internal and external stakeholders and provide the caller with the appropriate procedural action

  • Learning to respond verbally and in writing to inquiries received from internal and external stakeholders that inquire about the status of returns or require an explanation of discrepancies or adjustments

  • Learning how to prepare and submit production reports for work completed that cannot be logged by the computer system

  • Demonstrating a commitment to the service-oriented culture of the department

  • Applying Lean thinking in day-to-day tasks. Be mindful of internal controls and risk management when changes are made to a process

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time with the exception of in office training for 6 months and Commonwealth Policy 1 day a month in office. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of general office work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
