Overview

This individual is responsible for overseeing a team of attorneys in Connecticut and Massachusetts defending Selective Insurance insureds; will develop, implement and maintain all best practices, protocols, processes and performance standards relative to these offices; and will ensure best in class legal services of the staff counsel offices in representing insureds and containing overall claims expense. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. This is a hybrid role with 3 days in office and 2 days remote.


Responsibilities

  • Effectively balance managerial responsibilities with the handling of a small caseload.
  • Leads, coaches and develops all attorneys within the assigned staff counsel office(s). Mentors/provides training to attorneys when needed.
  • Influences development and implements policies/procedures and performance enforcement among staff counsel office personnel.
  • Oversees all litigated cases handled by attorneys of the assigned offices. Reviews and edits substantive documents drafted by the attorneys as appropriate.
  • Analyzes legal office procedures and policies for efficiency and effectiveness and proposes improvements when warranted, ensuring effective implementation of those changes.
  • Communicates and supports corporate policies and strategies to staff counsel employees and addresses any concerns regarding these policies or strategies.
  • Ensures appropriate conflict checking of all matters handled by the office(s) at intake and throughout the course of litigation. Ultimate responsibility for the ethical conduct of all office personnel and ensuring that all attorneys are licensed and in good standing.
  • Participates in committee meetings, roundtables, and conferences within the assigned office(s) and with the claims department at large. Responds to Claim Department requests.
  • Provides effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients and claims professionals. Participates in special projects or task force initiatives as requested.
  • Ensures proper usage of the legal case management software.
  • Chairs weekly staff meetings.
  • Reports directly to Regional Director.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of Connecticut and Massachusetts law and procedure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft products.
  • Legal case management software experience.
  • Excellent customer service, writing and oral communication skills.
  • Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing.
  • Travel requirements: approximately 25%.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Must be a member in good standing of the Connecticut Bar, Massachusetts Bar, or preferably both.
  • 10+ years legal experience in litigation.
  • 5+ years management experience.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.


Pay Range

USD $146,000.00 - USD $209,000.00 /Yr.
