As a member of the Product Support engineering team at Smith and Nephew Robotics, you're primarily responsible for the sustaining engineering of electrical designs for released products. You will also assist new product development efforts. In this role, you will design, develop, verifty, and validate products post- launch phase which may include design changes, design transfers, production changes, and product obsolescence using the processes and tools identified in the S&N Quality System related to Design Control and Engineering Change Control. This position is a functional member of a cross-functional project team working with marketing, manufacturing, quality, regulatory and other team members as appropriate to facilitate the requirements of the design project. **This position does not offer visa transfer or sponsorship now or in the future** What will you be doing?
- Perform root cause analysis on electrical and electromechanical products for customer complaints, quality issues, manufacturing issues, and supplier requests.
- Provides R&D engineering support for Quality and compliance activities including correcting quality problems in released product, compliance with new regulations and standards, support for Regulatory submissions for expansion into new geographies, and remediation of quality records.
- Responsible for definition of design inputs, electrical requirements, prototyping and testing protocols for sustaining projects to align with requirements of SN design control specifications and relevant regulatory bodies such as requirements development, risk management, design verification.
- Creates and drives test protocols to verify and validate design changes.
- Consults with the marketing staff, sponsoring surgeons, and manufacturing staff, as required, to facilitate proper design and development of agreed product improvements.
- Working with cross-functional teams such as Project Managers, Systems Engineering, Test, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory for a successful product delivery.
- Identifies and mitigates any impact to design integrity of current product from process changes or supplier/network changes, product obsolescence and end of life management for all assigned products.
- Supports returned product analysis, complaint investigations, retrieved component analysis, and post market surveillance with root cause analysis.
What will you need to be successful?
- BS in Electrical Engineering with 3+ years of experience OR Masters with 2+ years of experience
- Proficiency in Altium including developing schematics and layouts
- Experience with DFT and DFM for electrical design with manufacturers
- Hands-on experience with soldering and development and troubleshooting of both hardware and software for embedded targets.
- Proficient with reading and reviewing schematics, data sheet and hardware design.
- Background in designing boards for EMC, ESD and EMI considerations.
- Strong understanding of DFT and DFM in electrical board design
- Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols such as UDP, EtherCAT
- Experience with a regulated software development processes or familiarity with FDA and ISO standards like IEC 62304 is a plus.
- Experience in a regulated industry such as medical devices
- Experience in working with motors, actuators, video signals, sensors
- Understanding of communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, RS232, RS485, 1-WIRE, CAN, video and USB
- Experience with low level debugging using scope, JTAG, and software debuggers
