About the Role

We are currently seeking a Deputy Editor with research - and editorial experience to join Communications Biology- a multidisciplinary open access biology journal. The journal complements our other Nature Portfolio open access titles,Nature Communications, the other Communications series journalsandScientific Reports.

The new Deputy Editor will be working alongside the current Deputy Editor and Chief Editor to lead the journal's editorial board strategy. The editorial board is critical to the success of Communications Biology and is central to all aspects of journal strategy. The new Deputy Editor will also support the Chief Editor in journal development and management and line-manage associate/senior editors in the Communications Biology team.

Key responsibilities of the Deputy Editors include identifying potential Editorial Board Members, overseeing training and strategies for Editorial Board Member engagement, and working with various stakeholders to manage the Collections program.

The position is offered on a full-time basis (starting as soon as possible) andcan be located in our New York or Berlin offices.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the journal's Collections program Growing the editorial board to ensure adequate subject area coverage by identifying subject areas that need EBM coverage and overseeing recruitment to the editorial board.

  • Ensuring Editorial Board Members receive appropriate training and support.

  • Overseeing and developing Editorial Board Member engagement with the journal.

  • Line management of Associate/Senior Editors.

  • Handling original research papers and working closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review, at a 10% workload of a Senior Editor.

  • Liaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio family and with experts in the international scientific community.

  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.

  • Commissioning Reviews and Comment articles and writing Editorials.

  • Ensuring Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete state.

  • Other tasks as required.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant biology discipline. Post-doctoral experience would be advantageous but not essential.

  • Previous experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions within a world-class STM publishing company.

  • Experience of working with an external editorial board is highly desirable.

  • A genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency in reporting research.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken).

  • An eagerness to engage with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.

  • Strong workload management and organisational skills.

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $110,000 - $125,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
