Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Associate Director ITS Network Services, the Lead Network Engineer - ResNet is responsible for the technical operations of all wired and wireless network services for the ResNet program for residential locations. Has primary responsibility for all network monitoring, integrity and recovery capabilities to ensure 24x7 operation and administration of network services provided to end users and staff. Has primary responsibility for the supervision of the student ResNet network consultant staff as well as responding to tickets submitted by residents and staff. The ITS Network Services team is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and overall administration of network and internet connectivity to campus buildings, the North Hall Data Center, and wireless service supporting all campus academic, administrative, and residential operations. The ITS Network Services team provides secure network access using a common architecture, equipment, and process. As the key technical resource for the organization, the Lead Network Engineer will exercise a high degree of independence and autonomy in overseeing implementation of complex technical projects. Due to the necessity of a high-availability Information Technology communications infrastructure, this position is on call and is required to carry a cell phone. Duties include the deployment, implementation, evaluation and administration of wired and wireless network systems, including routers, switches, wireless controllers, authentication and accounting systems as well as the supervision of student workers supporting the ResNet services. Additional duties include support and communications to the residential users of the ResNet service.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 1-3 years of practical experience with the design, deployment and troubleshooting of wireless networks, including complex inter-domain authentication processes.
  • 1-3 years of experience with Edge Network Operations and Security.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional communications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
  • Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 3 protocols at a basic level and layer 2 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated diverse problem solving skills.
  • Ability to utilize and communicate via online collaboration tools such as Google Email, Google Calendar, Google docs/sheets.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

50% Wireless Network and Security Engineer

  • Responsible for the ongoing operations of all network services for Housing, Dining, & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE) ResNet program for residential students and for the standardized Administrative Services network.
  • Responsible for the day to day management of the wireless network infrastructure, including the setup, configuration, installation, and maintenance. This includes all switches and routers with associated hardware/firmware/software maintenance and management.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting wireless network infrastructure hardware and software problems.
  • Monitors all wireless network event logs daily. Schedules and completes periodic preventative maintenance for wireless network hardware and software.
  • Performs regular in-depth analysis of wireless network operation, traffic, protocols, and failures using sophisticated network analysis tools and communications diagnostic equipment.
  • Establishes priorities for wireless network traffic and provides on-going network management for Residential Network Program (ResNet) using sophisticated network hardware and software.
  • Develops systems and network documentation for the use by all network implementation staff.

25% ResNet Service Management

  • Serves as a primary manager for all ResNet Services, including GauchoPrint, Service Center Operations and ServiceNow Ticketing System.
  • Manages a staff of 12 Network Consultants (Student), who operate 3 ResNet Service Centers 7 days a week. Network Consultants are also a critical workforce for many network device staging and deployment.

15% Planning and Development

  • Identifies and strategically plans long-term technical implementation goals for the standardized Administrative Services network, the Residential Network Program, and expansion into other existing and planned University Housing facilities.
  • Participates in planning and design of facilities with regards to data communications needs.
  • Advises Associate Director, ITS Network Services on networking directions and implications for residential locations.
  • Serves as a resource for members of Admin Services Division IT and student staff with regards to technical aspects of the network.

10% Technical Documentation/ Student Knowledge Base

  • Responsible for ongoing operation of ResNet Google Doc Management system, including all installation and support procedures documentation.
  • Responsible for ongoing operation of ResNet Support Calendar & Project Documentation.
  • Responsible for ongoing operation of the Wireless Management Platform for use by all network support staff and student staff.
