Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences (the Department) at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine is a collaborative group of surgeons and cardiologists who work together to treat patients with cardiac, vascular, and thoracic diseases. Comprised of cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and cardiovascular imaging, the Department offers the newest technology and approaches that allow for the diagnosis and treatment of heart and circulatory system conditions at all stages.
The Department's educational pursuits support the highest quality of therapeutic care for patients with cardiovascular conditions and the Department serves as a leader in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, as well as in the rehabilitation of patients. With a focus on providing compassionate patient care and diverse educational opportunities, the Department is able to assist patients throughout eastern North Carolina and beyond. Fellowships in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, vascular surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery enables the spread of these advanced practices to numerous other physicians and surgeons.
The Department is located within the East Carolina Heart Institute (
ECHI), which was designed to offer state-of-the-art medical technology, education, and research in one cardiovascular center. The cornerstone of
ECHI is the collaboration between clinical medicine and scientific research. Researchers, scientists, and clinicians work together to create a place where patients come to receive world-class innovative care and cardiovascular specialists come to gain expertise. Research conducted within
ECHI is related to various cardiovascular diseases, including: (1) clinical and basic research efforts in cardiovascular care, (2) clinical trials to develop new treatments for cardiovascular disease, (3) educational programs for local, regional, and national health care providers, (4) wellness and prevention programs, and (5) clinical programs, including adult cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. |
Job Duties |
The Dr. and Mrs. Douglas C. Privette Distinguished Professorship will provide support to a cardiac surgeon who will serve the Brody School of Medicine.
This Professorship is expected to enhance the academic and research programs within the Brody School of Medicine department of Cardiovascular Sciences. The faculty member will conduct research and provide educational support for medical students and residents in the fields of Cardiac Surgery while continuing their own research, participating in departmental service, and mentoring scholarly activities while serving as a role model for faculty and students at East Carolina University.
Maintain national accolades as a recognized eminent scholar and teacher for medical students and residents.
Maintain excellence in patient care for East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine, and
ECU Health.
The term of the distinguished professor appointment will be no greater than a five-year appointment, renewable prior to expiration, in review with the Department Chair and Executive Dean. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
- Current BSOM faculty member with rank of Associate Professor/Clinical Associate Professor or Professor/Clinical Professor within the department of Cardiovascular Sciences
- MD or DO degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Board certification or Board Eligible in Cardiothoracic Surgery
- NC Medical License
