Position Title: Sorter/Cashier
Department: The Salvation Army, Divisional Regional Operations
Ketchikan Family Store, Gateway Corps
Reports To: Store Manager/Corps Officer
FLSA Status: Part-time / 30 hours per week; Non-exempt
SCOPE OF POSITION: The Sorter/Cashier is responsible to the Ketchikan Family Store. Their primary duty is to operate the point-of-sale system, checking out customers in a timely and courteous fashion. They will help to keep the store clean and neat, performing basic janitorial duties and placing product. They will be expected to put up all sales and marketing signs on the correct days and prior to store opening. They will also assist in the processing of donations. As the "face" of the store, they will be expected to fulfill the role of a brand ambassador for The Salvation Army. Finally, they are to aid in maintaining a safe, positive, and professional Christian environment for customers and coworkers in support of the values of Jesus Christ and The Salvation Army.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Minimum 1 year work experience in any field. (Sales/Retail preferred) 2. Strong communication and customer service skills. 3. Ability to complete all assigned training. 4. Ability to work well independently and in a detailed, professional, and courteous manner. 5. Ability to work on a dynamic high performing small team. 6. Ability to work independently to meet goals set by management. 7. Valid Drivers License (preferred) Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: 1. Be a fast learner and able to keep pace with multiple priorities. 2. Be flexible and open to new ideas, concepts, and ways of doing things. 3. Ability to perform basic math without the use of a calculator or other device. 4. Ability to provide positive customer service.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCITONS: 1. Maintain a clean and safe work area. 2. Communicating with customers, supervisors, and co-workers. 3. Ability to maintain and provide till records 4. Supervise volunteers in accordance with The Salvation Army policies and procedures. 5. Assist in keeping racks and shelves neat, clean, and orderly. 6. Answer telephone as needed. 7. Use equipment and systems such as a computer, point of sale system, phone, and time clock. 8. Be proficient in MS Excel. (Preferred but not required) 9. Show up on time and be flexible with hours should additional help be needed. 10. Maintain cash register, checking out customers and providing quality customer service. 11. Assist in all cleanups throughout store, sorting, and warehouse areas. 12. Counting money, giving correct change, other basic cash register skills 13. Maintain good morale while speaking with and working around customers. 14. Price items for sale or storage during "slow" periods of the sales day. 15. Attend trainings as required including but not limited to Protect the Mission - child safety training, CPR certification and The Salvation Army fleet safety training. 16. Be willing to attend all orientation meetings/classes. 17. Maintain professional appearance adhering to dress code policies. 18. Other duties as assigned by the Store Manager and/or Corps Officers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an indoor, store environment. Exposure to extreme temperatures is not a condition of this job. Noise level is generally low.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, run, jump, and twist. Maintain the ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as boxes or furniture, reach overhead, and carry store supplies. Maintain the ability to operate a computer, telephone, and similar technologies. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to learn and adhere to proper lifting techniques, always wearing a back brace when lifting heavy items. Qualified individuals must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation. A qualified person with a disability may request a modification or adjustment to the job or work environment in order to meet the physical requirements of the position. Software-related Skills: Microsoft Excel familiarity preferred. Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.
Language Skills: Must be able to understand, follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face-to-face contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.
Mathematical Skills: Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.
Performance Skills: Must be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.
Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.
Driving Requirement: Must be a licensed driver with acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.
