Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under the direction of the Electrical Superintendent this position is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance repair, and troubleshooting of UCSB's high voltage and distribution infrastructure in a safe and professional manner, including the campus 12.47kV electrical distribution system. Assists in the development of a robust a high voltage electricity preventative maintenance program to ensure all main system transformers, metal-clad switchgear, field switches, 15kV cable and cable splices are operating in an efficient and safe manner. Identifies components that are not operating within their design parameters, develops a replacement/repair strategy, schedules subsequent outages and makes necessary changes to return the system to normal operations. As part of the Preventative Maintenance ("PM") program, uses Infrared Imaging technology to diagnose potential problems, performs standard oil testing and dissolved gas analysis on all oil-filled equipment. In coordination with the FM Electrical Engineer, develops trending models to evaluate long-term health of all oil-filled equipment. Operates and maintains high voltage relays. Monitors and maintains system to monitor power usage, breaker positions, current balancing and power quality. Splices and terminates high voltage cable. Provides support to Design and Construction Services for all electrical utility work that will provide electrical service to the new building(s). Work with FM Trade Staff to ensure the use of all required safety equipment and code requirements are strictly followed. Required Qualifications:
- CA General Electrician Certification. 8000 hours of work for an electrical contractor installing, constructing or maintaining electrical systems covered by the National Electrical Code. The 8000 hours must consist of work in two or more of areas specified by the State of California Department of Industrial Relations.
- Certificate of completion of a recognized apprenticeship, accredited trade school, or the equivalent amount of experience
and training comparable to journey level crafts status as a High Voltage Electrician. - 6 years of experience working at a journeyman level as an electrician in commercial and residential environments.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints. Thorough knowledge of the NEC and the California Electric Code.
- Ability to work in an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic team environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Understanding of safety practices and Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- CA General Electrician Certification Upon Hire Required
Special Conditions of Employment:
- Must be able to take night and weekend overtime call-backs. Hours and days may vary to meet the operational needs of the department.
- Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 65% High Voltage Operations - Responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the campus High Reliability Distribution System (HRDS). Provide technical support for the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the campus high voltage electrical distribution system as well as: 1. Tests, troubleshoots, cleans, and repairs UCSB's high voltage electrical distribution system to maintain proper power to campus facilities. 2. Under the direction of the Electrical Superintendent and in consultation with the FM Electrical Engineer, oversees the daily operation and maintenance of the campus High Reliability Distribution System (HRDS). 3. Verifies (daily) the status of system alarm condition which are reported as part of the campus SCADA system. 4. Performs parallel switching to work circuits, balances power load and/or brings new campus facilities online. 5. Conducts annual PM program using advanced technology such as Infrared Thermal Imaging, standard oil sampling and dissolved gas analysis to ensure proper operation, system/equipment reliability and overall general condition of the electrical distribution system. 6. Repairs or terminates high voltage cables using various splicing techniques and tools to eliminate cable stress. 7. In conjunction with the campus electrical engineer writes switching procedures for high voltage installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. 8. Responsible for the operation, maintenance and installation of all main building electrical metering. Works with Campus Energy Manager to ensure data from the meter installations is reporting on a timely basis. 9. Works with Design and Construction Services concerning all high voltage extensions and conducts all high voltage switching necessary to provide electrical service to the new building. 10. Programs, operates, and maintains high voltage relays with the use of lap-top computers. 11. Investigates and performs root cause analysis for system failures and identify corrective measures to restore system functionality. 12. In conjunction with the campus electrical engineer, maintains high voltage prints/schematics to provide a record of operation and repair for work performed. 13. In conjunction with the campus electrical engineer, monitors power usage, breaker positions, current balancing, and power quality. 14. Maintains high voltage test equipment by cleaning and/or sending it out for lab testing. 15. Maintains proper maintenance inventories of high voltage parts, fuses, elbows, cable, and splicing materials.
- 25% Low Voltage/Building Wiring Systems - Performs the full range of duties as a general electrician: 1. Designs, installs, repairs, maintains and inspects electrical systems and equipment such as motors, fixtures, transformers, generators, wiring, switchboards, alarms systems, controllers, circuit breakers and transmission equipment; works from blueprints and specifications; makes working drawings and single line power diagrams; locates and diagnoses electrical malfunctions using various test instruments such as an ammeter, megometer and multimeter. These repairs require a thorough knowledge of building, safety and national electric codes. 2. Repairs malfunctions by such methods as replacing burnt out elements and fuses; replacing defective wiring, circuit breakers, switches, outlets and contacts. Repairs and replaces motors; performs preventative maintenance; tests electrical equipment for safety and efficiency; inspects circuits and wiring for grounding and shielding deficiencies; repairs and replaces lighting fixtures using ladders, lifts, and scaffolding. 3. Makes standard computations related to load requirements, branch circuit and feeder wiring or electrical equipment. 4. Assists in the service or repair of high voltage lines and equipment as required on an emergency or routine basis. 5. Instructs or leads, semi-skilled or unskilled assistants; works with others as a member of a team; provides direct customer service to the campus community. 6. Optimizes building energy efficiency and operation while maintaining quality service and environmental standards for the building occupants.
- 10% General, Safety & Security - General, safety and security measures are identified as follows: 1. Utilizes hand held radio to communicate with dispatcher, supervisor and co-workers. 2. Participates in safety and professional training programs. 3. Participates in maintaining a work environment which is conducive to the mission of Facilities Management. 4. Proactive in providing a positive customer service environment. 5. Performs work in a safe manner, abiding by all UCSB policies and procedures including, but not limited to: breathing apparatus, respiratory protection, asbestos and lead paint safety procedures, hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolding and safety harness. 6. Adheres to current safety regulations and precautions as prescribed by the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Uniform Building Code and EPA, including storage and disposal procedures, common safety shop practices, guidelines or polices per other applicable Federal, State and local agencies. 7. Understands and adheres to the safety practices on use of all hand and power tools associated with this position, electrical and other building and maintenance trades. 8. Understands and adheres to current safety practices in relation to proper ventilation and non-smoking rules when working with flammable substances and harmful inhalants. 9. Participates in and complies with departmental safety programs; required to comply with FM Safety Program as implemented by supervisor. 10. Promptly reports on the job accidents to the supervisor. 11. Locks unoccupied areas before leaving them, including windows and doors. 12. Keeps vehicle locked when unoccupied, including all tool storage bins. 13. Safeguards assigned keys and radio by keeping them on person at all times during working hours and securing them at the end of shift. 14. Unless on official business, work keys are to remain on campus at all times. 15. Responsible for other related duties as assigned.
