How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

As a Real Time Information Specialist for the Metro Transit Police Department, you will provide support to the patrol and investigations divisions within the Metro Transit Police Department on calls for service and suspicious activity to ensure the efficient flow of information and communication throughout the agency. This position works in the Real Time Information Center (RTIC) assisting the patrol and investigations divisions of the Metro Transit Police Department in viewing CCTV video both live and recorded while maintaining confidentiality and compliance procedures.


What you would do in this job

  • Monitor CCTV cameras throughout the transit system for criminal and suspicious activities. Staff then pass the information on to MTPD patrol officers responding to the scene.
  • Review calls for service as they are received in real time and pass information onto patrol officers.
  • Capture photos of suspects and victims and disseminate them to patrol officers.
  • Review active patrol calls for service and update them as officers are dispatched to the call.
  • Apply MN criminal statues to what is viewed on video to determine violations of the law.
  • Provide officer safety information such as presence of weapons and or location of weapons.
  • Assist the MTPD Investigations unit with case investigations and video review of incidents.
  • Review completed police reports.
  • Take information from the police reports and find the criminal activity on video.
  • Create "attempt to identify" sheets for the investigations staff to disseminate.
  • Identify whether reported activity was a violation of MN State Statutes.
  • Monitor stations, platforms, and trains camera systems in times with no active calls for service, report incidents through the proper channels established in policy and procedures.
  • Identify criminal behavior in violation on Minnesota State Statutes.
  • Communicate with patrol staff in real time on coordination and response.
  • Complete police reports documenting the violations and what was observed.
  • Identifying what is seen on video and knowing to either call TCC or get directly on the radio based on severity and need for immediate response.
  • Accurately share information with patrol officers and take requests from patrol officers to find information based on their investigations.
  • Knowing where to find information (i.e where relevant cameras are located).
  • Take limited information from the call for service and find the situation to update officers.
  • Able to multitask using more than one system at once to find the solution to a problem.
  • Take limited information and use video systems and other criminal justice resources to ID suspects.
  • Use and operate MTPD and Metro Transit Computer systems to communicate with staff and document observations.
  • Navigating Video Management System software to observe criminal activity.
  • Use computer aided dispatch to communicate with officers in the field.
  • Use police radio channels to communicate with officers and TCC staff.
  • Use MTPD records management systems to write and review police reports.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of related work experience in administrative work and completed education (in Law Enforcement, Corrections or related field):

  • A high school diploma/GED with four (4) or more years of administrative work experience.
  • Associate degree with (2) years or more of administrative work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher with one (1) year or more of administrative work experience.

Metropolitan Council Employees Only: Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to your application. Only completion of one of the four programs listed below will substitute credit (6 months or 1 year) for lead/supervisory experience.

Metro Transit Leadership Academy = 1 year
Project Management Development Program (12-month session) = 1 year
Project Management Development Program (6-month session) = 6 months
Four Learning Institute Certificates - You must obtain all four certificates listed below to receive credit for 6 months supervisory experience.

  • Leading Self-Personal Effectiveness Certificate
  • Leading Self-Communication Certificate
  • Leading Self-Business Skills Certificate
  • Leading Others-Preparing for Supervisor Certificate

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):
  • Experience with CCTV camera systems and Police CAD systems.
  • Experience in a law enforcement setting.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to and learn new technologies as they evolve.

What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of a body of standardized regulations, requirements, procedures, and operations associated with law enforcement and police department functions.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota laws and statues.
  • Knowledge of the use and operation of CCTV equipment.
  • Knowledge of police terminology.
  • Skills in Microsoft Office, Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.
  • Skilled in viewing video and transcribing what is seen in detail into documents.
  • Ability to perform data entry with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ability to use a police radio and CAD system.
  • Ability to verbally communicate information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to effectively organize tasks and establish work priorities.
  • Ability to review data for details and accuracy.

What your work environment would be:
You would perform your work in a standard office setting. Work may sometimes require travel between your primary work site and other sites. This position is rated essential and works onsite, various day or night shifts with alternating weekends, and has access to free parking and/or accessible to free bus/rail transportation.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
