Sr. Assistant City Attorney I

Summary

This is a position for which a candidate must have considerable and demonstrable capabilities and experience. The primary focus of this position is on complex business, procurement, and construction transactional matters involving the City and its operations. The applicant should have experience in the vast body of matters that affect Texas municipalities as further illustrated by the descriptions below

Salary Range: Based on experience and qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties will be assigned.

  • Act as legal counsel for the City in matters involving the City's interests, primarily focusing on business, procurement, and construction transactions; contract negotiation, drafting, and review; and all related matters.

  • Research and draft contracts, bid documents, and related ordinances.

  • Coordinate and monitor the work of retained counsel.

  • Respond to legal inquiries on wide-ranging topics from City department heads.

Minimum Qualifications

  • JD in Law from an accredited institution

  • Minimum 5 - 7 years as a licensed attorney focusing primarily on transactional work (3 - 4 years related experience in municipal or other government law)

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas

  • Proven self-starter able to work independently with minimum supervision

  • Must be able to work occasional evenings as council, board, or commission meetings may require

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered. This is not, however, an entry-level position.

** The selected applicants must submit multiple (not less than three) illustrative samples of business, procurement, or construction transaction contracts of which the applicant was the sole or primary author for purposes of determining the ability of the applicant to handle matters of the level expected to be assigned to this Senior Assistant City Attorney I.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the law applicable to the activities, duties, and operations of a home rule municipal government

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the of municipal procurement, transaction, and construction law

  • Demonstrated ability to research and analyze complex issues

  • Organized and clear writing style

  • Strong oral communication skills

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors

  • Ability to interact on a professional level with elected officials, staff, and members of the public

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently, successfully, and on-time

Licenses and Certifications

Admitted to practice law in Texas.
