Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $25.51/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $25.51 to $30.37/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:
Under general supervision provide laboratory and field support for research studies on sandy beach invertebrate and surf zone fish communities and other nearshore and coastal habitats.

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years experience in and ability to perform quantitative ecological sampling of marine biota and process biotic samples in the laboratory.
  • Experience in and ability to perform quantitative ecological sampling of marine biota and habitats. Experience conducting quantitative field surveys of biota of sandy beaches and surf zones.
  • Taxonomic knowledge of local marine flora and fauna and ability to identify fish, invertebrates and marine algae in the field and laboratory.
  • Experience processing quantitative samples of marine invertebrates and other organisms in the laboratory.
  • Ability to accurately record and perform QA/QC on data from field observations and laboratory samples.
  • Ability to work in challenging weather conditions in exposed locations to perform field research duties.
  • Ability to perform data entry and basic statistical analyses of community and population data.
  • Two years of relevant laboratory and field research experience and college courses in ecology, biology, and natural sciences; or equivalent combination.
  • University Research Diver Certified (AAUS) to 30 feet Upon Hire.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Satisfactory conviction history background check
  • Work hours will vary due to field surveys with long days and also possible weekend hours. University Research Dive Certification (AAUS) to at least 30 feet depth IACUC training required
  • Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 50% Assist with field research on surf zone fish and beach biota - Under general supervision assist with research survey activities including setup and takedown of sampling gear and performing replicated surveys. Identify and measure biota and habitat characteristics and record data under general supervision. Clean up, repair, pack and transport sampling gear.
  • 30% Assist with data entry for surf zone and beach research surveys and samples - Under general supervision, scan and enter data from field surveys and laboratory samples in standard data forms and assist with QA/QC of datasets.
  • 20% Assist with processing of biotic samples in the laboratory - Under general supervision process and identify quantitative samples of marine invertebrates and other organisms in the laboratory.
