The IP PSL will monitor developments in the legal and business environment, in order to keep both the IP Practice and its clients up to date and identify areas to develop the Firm's reputation and practice; provide legal and practical expertise to support the practice, both through responding to lawyer queries and through the mentoring of junior lawyers; help to create, develop and manage the Group's collection of precedents and research materials; organize and deliver Group training; work with IP Practice lawyers and the IP Business Development team to identify opportunities to develop business from new and existing clients, including assistance with implementing and maintaining docket and client monitoring processes; and provide other support as needed. The individual will ideally have been exposed to the practice of intellectual property law across functions (litigation and transactional support) and across subareas (patent, trade secrets, copyright / trademark) to have a working knowledge of these disciplines and be familiar with the documentation and issues. Specific responsibilities described below may vary depending on the Group's needs.
Duties and Accountabilities1
Lawyer Training and Technical Expertise
- Be a source of legal, market and practical expertise for all members of the practice and more widely around the Firm, including the provision of direct support for identification of potential client matters and maintenance of client matters where appropriate;
- Work with the IP practice partners and other Professional Support teams to identify practice-related training needs of the Group; organize, design and deliver (personally or with others) Group training, including seminars, workshops and offsite training;
- Work with the wider Professional Support Team to develop any global training programs, as required by the Partners;
- Be involved in in firmwide training programs, as required, including core training programs and induction courses;
- Be a source of legal, market and practical expertise for all members of the Group; and
- Mentor trainees and associates.
Standard Forms and Key Precedents
- Draft standard forms and develop accompanying notes;
- Ensure standard forms are updated to reflect changes in law, regulation, market standards and best practice; and
- Identify and maintain collections of precedents documents from closed transactions.
Know-How
- Create practice notes and other useful know-how on Intellectual Property related topics;
- Conduct matter debriefs for precedent collection and analysis;
- Operate and implement procedures for capturing, filtering, storing, accessing and disseminating know-how within group; and
- Develop material on Firm intranet / KM systems and encourage lawyers to use those systems and other know-how sources.
Matter Management and Collaboration
- Work with the Group and IP Business Development to establish processes to capture matter descriptions and categorizations in Firm databases.
Central Knowledge Projects
- Be a champion for rolling out new knowledge systems including sharing inductions of new joiners/NQs with other Professional Support Lawyers; and
- Contribute to global knowledge and innovation programs and projects to support Firm collaboration, efficiency and to enhance intellectual property law expertise across the Firm.
Current Awareness and Thought Leadership
- Monitor and keep the Group and the Professional Support team informed about important developments in the law or business environment;
- Use own knowledge and expertise to identify trends in the law or business environment with particular emphasis on intellectual property and help the Group identify possible new services and suggest innovative ways to deliver the Firm's services more efficiently to its clients;
- Work with the Professional Support Team and research team to prepare regular and ad hoc current awareness newsletters for the Group from internal and external sources, including ongoing efforts with potential clients and identification of potential new matters; and
- Co-author and publish research on legal developments or new areas of law relevant to the Group.
Miscellaneous
- Assist lawyers with queries;
- Attend regular meetings of Professional Support Lawyers and training meetings;
- Attend global conference calls of PSLs and Knowledge Department;
- Attend regular meetings of the Group and provide Professional Support updates to meeting; and
- Attend external training and conferences to keep up to date with relevant developments in the law, business environment and professional support.
At least six years' sound legal experience as an attorney in intellectual property practice in a leading law firm.
