Prep Cook - Memorial Union Kitchen

Job Summary:

Are you looking to start your culinary career? The Wisconsin Union is looking for a prep cook to join their team in the Memorial Union Kitchen. In this role, you will prepare food under the direction of an Assistant Chef. This is your opportunity to join a great team of people dedicated to making great food and becoming recognized as the premier food venue on campus.


Responsibilities:
Performs a variety of food preparation activities and related tasks according to quality and safety standards in dining, retail, and/or catering venues to ensure customer satisfaction and achieve departmental food service goals.

  • 30% Performs routine and non-routine food preparation activities including cook to order and specialty foods
  • 15% Trains and guides student workers
  • 15% Greets customers, answers questions, and provides information regarding food preparation and associated activities
  • 10% Cleans, inspects, and maintains kitchen equipment and work areas
  • 10% Adheres to federal, state, campus, and local food safety regulations, policies, and procedures
  • 10% Coordinates production and product from the Salad and Sandwich Shop
  • 5% Assistance with the organization in the work areas assigned
  • 5% Performance of related duties as assigned during a vacation or other short term vacancy


Tasks:

  • Safely operates equipment and cuts, chops, slices, dices, and shreds: meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables and other food items
  • Verify each item is labeled correctly with unit, yield, and product identification as well as date, time, and temperature
  • Guides, directs, and trains students across multiple shifts and ensures proper food handling by all employees in the group
  • Using the Food Pro system as intended. Including batching recipes, ordering internal supplies, and complying with production sheets
  • Communicates in a timely manner with supervisors concerning upcoming needs
  • Performs inventory on a weekly basis and communicates needs and conditions of products to supervisors

Previous work experience - high volume kitchen experience preferred


License/Certification:

Required
ServSafe Certification
Hold or obtain within 6 months


Work Schedule:

Core Hours: 6am- 2pm: Days worked will vary and will include 2 weekends per month.
*Schedule based on business needs and may change.
Up to 30 hours per week


Work Type:

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended based on need and/or funding.


Salary:

$16.50 HOURLY
Fixed
-Plus an additional $0.80 per hour for weekend hours worked.
-Plus Time and a half per hour for hours worked on designated legal holidays.
-Plus an additional $2.50 per hour for night hours worked (6pm-6am).


Additional Information:

The Wisconsin Union operates from several buildings on the UW-Madison campus including Memorial Union, Union South, Fluno Center, Pyle Center, University Club, Red Gym, and the Student Activity Center. The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by over thirty food service units and a variety of nonfood units such as games, guest rooms, space rentals and campus vending. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The total annual organizational budget is approximately $60 million dollars.

Student Affairs is led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Our staff is dedicated to serving students and to helping them succeed in and out of the classroom in areas including health and well-being, identity and inclusion, leadership and engagement, and student advocacy.
