Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

As the Floodplain Permit Plans Examiner, you will provide reviews of residential, commercial, and other construction plans to ensure completeness, accuracy, and conformance to floodplain regulations. In addition, you will perform various duties in providing customer information and assistance related to the floodplain development process, including but not limited to planning, building, code enforcement, and maintaining records using the County's automated permitting system and computerized geographic information system.

We Require

  • Two years of experience in architectural, residential, or commercial building plan review, which includes reading and interpreting commercial and residential construction plans and specifications

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Post-secondary education in Hydrology, Urban Planning, Urban Geography, Architecture, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or a related field may substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Certified Floodplain Manager

  • Experience conducting research and analyzing problems and issues related to floodplain development

  • Experience in customer service

Job Contributions

  • Review residential and commercial building civil/site plans to ensure compliance with the floodplain regulations, state statutes, and federal/state regulations

  • Review aerial and floodplain maps to gather information to determine the level of additional review required for permit issuance

  • Prepare comments related to development compliance with the floodplain regulations and prepare documents for issuing flood use permits

  • Function as subject matter expert by displaying a thorough and deep understanding of the department's functions

  • Communicate with the general public, other county employees, contractors, and engineers to explain and administer development requirements and regulations

Working Conditions

  • This position is eligible for hybrid flexibility after a brief training period

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly or requires walking or standing to a significant degree

  • The position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

  • Personal computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
