Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Accounting Specialist for University Finance and Administration (
UFA - Accounting Operations. Reporting to a Senior Accountant Supervisor, this position is primarily responsible for processing and controlling University Petty Cash, Travel/Cash Advances issued to University faculty and staff, and performing account reconciliations.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Opens new Petty Cash accounts and maintains all existing Petty Cash accounts in compliance with established procedures, ensuring appropriate use of funds.
- Manages the workflow and processing of Travel/Cash Advances in Concur Travel & Expense and reviews and ensures supporting documentation adheres to University policy and procedures.
- Deposits and records checks received from the State of New Jersey and other sources to a Cash Clearing account to further research and allocate to the appropriate University department.
- Prepares general ledger balance sheet account reconciliations monthly.
- Ensures all reconciliations are performed in a timely manner, consistent with the University and departmental established policies and deadlines.
- Researches and resolves outstanding reconciling items and notes all attempts to identify open items on the monthly reconciliation.
- Tracks reconciling items, notifies department and UCO management, and prepares appropriate adjusting journal entries on a timely basis.
- Provides assistance on various projects, such as ongoing process improvement initiatives, year-end analytical reviews and reporting.
- Provides assistance with internal/external audit requests as needed, and other general accounting functions.
- Works independently under general supervision within established work parameters.
- Carries out routine and non-routine tasks with occasional review of work outputs by supervisor.
- Performs professional work requiring knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and a good understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology, and applied bases of accounting.
- Communicates with faculty and staff in various functional departments across the University, and various external parties in a courteous and professional manner.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree preferably in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
- Two (2) years of relevant experience in a financial/accounting function.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy (MS Office - advanced Excel skills, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, ERP application experience).

- Exceptional customer service skills.
