Description

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Department: Department of Cell & Developmental Biology

Job Title: Laboratory Sciences Professional (Open Rank Entry-Senior)

Position #00831876 - Requisition # 36223

Job Summary:

This is an Open Rank Laboratory Science position that will support the lab of Dr. Ally Nguyen in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The lab professional will contribute to maintaining the lab and conducting basic science research on genome integrity. In the past, we found that the requirements for proteins involved in core-cellular processes can differ significantly across cellular contexts, including across different cell types, within disease, or across species. Our lab is interested in identifying these selectively required genes, specifically those that are involved in cell division and the maintenance of genomic integrity and harnessing these differences as the key to unraveling their function. We are also driven to uncover these selectively required genes as they serve as attractive candidates for targeted therapeutics - genes that could serve as an "Achilles heel" for cancer cells, while minimizing off-target effects to healthy tissues. To approach this, we use targeted and large scale CRISPR/Cas9 based gene editing approaches in mammalian cell lines, in combination will cell biological and molecular techniques.

The successful candidate will work on at least one independent project and will have training, interest, and/or a background in genome regulation. We value a team-based approach to science. As part of this, the successful candidate may at times be tasked to assist other trainees in the lab with their research projects. A significant part of the position will also be to manage the general administration of the lab including ordering, inventory, onboarding of new lab members, and maintenance of lab equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Purchasing orders
  • Starting/maintaining the lab.
  • Experiments using mammalian cell lines, including embryonic cell types
  • Perform CRISPR/CAS9 gene knockout screens
  • High-resolution microscopy experiments.
  • Plasmid design and molecular cloning.
  • Transduction experiments using viral vectors

You do not need to be an expert in all the techniques listed, although it would be helpful if you are familiar with some of them. Dr. Nguyen can teach you techniques as long as you are motivated to learn and ask questions.

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Why Join Us:

Dr. Nguyen recently opened her lab in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, where her research seeks to understand how cells organize and segregate their genomes and how these processes change across diverse cellular contexts. In addition to cutting edge research, Dr. Nguyen highly values mentoring and teaching and has thought deeply about how to create an environment where scientists can grow and gain independence. We are dedicated to developing a research program that not only strives to answer fundamental questions at the forefront of genome biology, but that is inclusive and provides an opportunity for trainees from all backgrounds to succeed and reach their individual and unique goals. As part of this we strongly believe that great science does not occur in isolation and are looking for dedicated and collaborative individuals to join our team.
