THE POSITION

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student with a diverse background, seeking a career in libraries, archives, and museums? The State Library of Pennsylvania is looking for a dedicated intern to join our team of professionals within our Rare Collections Library. This internship gives you the opportunity to assist in the organization, preservation, and promotion of materials through exhibits, presentations, social media, website, and digitization. You will have a chance to share your passion of rare books and special collections with users, while providing in-person and remote access reference services. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Rare Collections Library has been housed in a state-of-the-art preservation facility since 2006. These collections include some of the Commonwealth's oldest, rarest, most fragile materials, such as the Pennsylvania Assembly Collection, the Pennsylvania Imprints Collection, rare pamphlet volumes, and the Rare Newspapers Collection. This internship gives you the opportunity to develop a working knowledge of the basic history, theory, and best practices relating to materials found in special collections research libraries, including but not limited to printed books, manuscripts, archival material, and ephemera, prints, maps, and other graphic works. Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing library materials for potential transfer to the Rare Collections based upon established criteria
  • Planning and creating exhibits
  • Assisting with tours and programming
  • Preserving materials
  • Evaluating collections and making recommendations for diversifying collections to better represent the people of Pennsylvania
  • Assisting with outreach efforts, including contributing content to LibGuides, social media, or writing an article on a rare book or pamphlet title

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Internship, 10 to 20 hours per week, approximately 10 weeks, May 2025 through August 2025
  • Work hours are flexible 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in college full-time or part-time (carrying 12 or more undergraduate credits enrolled in any major or 3 or more graduate credits, enrolled in a library science, archives, history or museum program).
  • Graduates from Spring of 2025 may also be considered for this program.
  • Be in good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
