Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARY: Under general Supervision, operates radiation therapy equipment and applies ionized radiation treatment to patients according to physician's prescriptions and instructions. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Delivers a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy. Checks prescription, consent form, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification. Reviews daily treatment dose and delivers prescribed dosage. Maintains patient markings.
- Explains to the patient the procedure that will be followed during simulation and treatment. Gives instruction regarding reactions to treatment and care of the area being radiated.
- Closely monitors patients during treatment and simulation by use of visible and audible communication. Observes patient for reactions secondary to radiation treatment and reports these findings to the radiation oncologist and/or the patient's nurse or supervising therapist.
- Documents clinical set ups clearly and accurately in patient's chart.
- Labels portal films and files in appropriate place.
- Assists in tumor localization and dosimetry procedures.
- Performs daily physics checks on treatment unit and reports problems to Medical Engineering and/or the Supervisor. Prepares room and equipment for each patient in accordance to the prescription and simulation sheet.
- Schedules patients on treatment machines and maintains billing information for patients being treated. Performs other clerical duties as needed.
- Assist in the training of radiation therapy students.
- Keeps machine rooms fully stocked and alerts Chief when supplies are low.
- Attends conferences inside and outside of Tufts MC to maintain professional affiliations in the field of radiation therapy.
- Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment
- Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
Qualifications
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Good verbal and interpersonal skills are needed to successfully interact with patients, nurses and physicians.
EDUCATION:
- Level of knowledge generally acquired by completion of an associate degree.
EXPERIENCE:
- An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements
LICENSES, ETC.:
- Registered by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists. Maintains CEU records for licensure and registration.
AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes:
- Knowledge of growth and development
- Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care
- Provide age specific communication
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Frequent interactions with patients, nurses, and physicians.
- Exposure to ionizing radiation, but personal exposure is minimal.
- Exposure to ill patients with various healthcare problems.
- Ability to lift patients and stand for long periods of time.
