Location: Divisional Headquarters

Status: Non-Exempt/ Regular Full-Time, 40 hours per week, 100 % FTE

Reports to: Assistant Director of Development

Position Description

The Manager of Donor Relations is responsible for assisting with all aspects of donor relations, donor cultivation, and donor stewardship for an assigned caseload of donors who generously contribute between $1,000 - $4,999 each year to The Salvation Army. The caseload is comprised of 600-1,500 donor households. The expectation is that each donor household will receive meaningful contact throughout the year regarding the impact of their giving and at least one annual gift request per year. Goals for the position include at least a 3% or more increase in revenue from donors in your caseload. This role reports to the Assistant Director of Development and participates in a collaborative, cross-functional team of Development project managers to help The Salvation Army achieve its Northwest Division fundraising objectives and goals.

Relevant Experience



  • Demonstrates familiarity with fundraising, marketing, communications, event management, and community relations principles.
  • Customer service or customer relationship management demonstrated through phone, email, written and technical support.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required



  • Embraces, supports, and reflects well on The Salvation Army's mission and values through one's professional responsibilities and behavior at all times.
  • Bachelor's degree or comparable experience, plus a minimum of three years of experience in a non-profit fundraising role or similar position with a proven track record of effective customer service.
  • Practical interpersonal skills, demonstrating emotional intelligence and situational awareness.
  • Team player, able to check ego at the door, with an ability to collaborate effectively with team for successful achievement of position and department goals.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Must be highly organized and able to effectively manage multiple projects and competing priorities with professionalism and grace.
  • Good documentation must be kept and donor confidentiality must be ensured through activity tracking and using the designated database according to The Salvation Army protocols.
  • Demonstrates goal orientation and initiative, with a drive to achieve agreed-upon goals within agreed-upon timeframes.
  • Performs other development duties as requested
  • High level of accuracy and thoroughness
  • Strong communication skills through phone etiquette, written and verbal.
  • Ability to work with a broad audience, including but not limited to: The Salvation Army officers and staff, Advisory Board Committee members, non-profit, government, and corporate groups
  • Ability to work professionally with sensitive or confidential information


Software-Related Skills



  • Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required
  • Canva or Photoshop preferred


Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Builds and maintains a relationship between donors and The Salvation Army through program updates, appreciation notes, invitations and recognition opportunities to caseload donors
  • Creates donor acknowledgments and receipts within 48 hours
  • Calls and thanks donors within 48 hours
  • Responds to donor inquiries (by email and phone) in a prompt and courteous manner
  • Invites donors to special events and tours
  • Maintains updated records for all donors in the database
  • Documents relevant details about the donors gathered from conversation and research
  • Translate monthly reports on donor-giving patterns to update leadership and build strategy
  • Collaborates with Development team members to inspire and inform our donors as well as our colleagues in the field
  • Trains and partners with officers and staff members in our units on the benefits and best practices of the donor relations program
  • Transitions higher level donors to Donor Relations Directors' caseloads as appropriate
  • Manages other tasks as assigned


Physical Requirements



  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects such as files file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
  • Ability to operate a telephone
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (usually file boxes)
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer
  • Ability to understand written information



Work Schedule / Location: Monday through Friday / In-person at Northwest Division headquarters in Seattle, WA, with opportunity to work remotely on a part-time basis.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options: An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months' service time.
