Location: Hybrid - Fixed
Schedule: Part Time 18 hours a week

Hourly Pay: $20.00-23.00

Position Overview:

Youth Peer Advocate is responsible for engaging program enrolled youth and their families in the identification of needs and assist in the pursuit of academic, mental health and recreational goals. This include but is not limited to the collaboration with other organizations, public education about youth mental health issues, assist in the organization of social, recreational and education activities, represent the interest of youth in public forums and advisory groups, and data entry. Additionally, this position may carry a caseload.

Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Serves as a role model for Queens Adolescent Skills Center (QAC) program participants.
  • Provides peer support to ASC enrolled youth.
  • Develops and facilitates support groups and conducts workshops on topics of interest to ASC enrolled youth.
  • Performs home visits or visits to internship or job sites as needed.
  • Participates in outreach activities/events
  • Appropriately and effectively interacts with collaborating agencies as needed.
  • Appropriately and effectively interacts with agency personnel.
  • Attends weekly supervision and case conferences meetings.
  • Attends meetings, trainings and seminars as required.
  • Demonstrates willingness to work flexible hours on occasion.
  • May carry a small caseload

Decision Making:


  • Identifies multi-faceted problems affecting achievement of individual goals and provides solutions.
  • Decisions have minor organizational impact that may require consultation with internal and external stakeholders regarding issues, possible solutions and implementation of alternatives.
  • Analyzes and interprets issues, realigns responsibilities, commits resources and proposes alternative solutions.
  • Implements solutions for minor projects after approval; held accountable if no action is taken.
  • Multi-factor decision- making requiring research and analysis, subject to supervisory guidance.



Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands


  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.



Required Qualifications:


  • Must be a young adult who has experienced mental health challenges and who has received mental health services.
  • Knowledge of other child and adolescent service systems helpful.
  • High school degree or GED required.
  • Must be comfortable discussing personal history of mental health challenges with ASC enrolled youth.
