Department Summary

Risk Management Services' programs provide proactive support for the strategic, operational and financial foundation of the University of North Texas. A safe academic environment is the top priority of our department and staff members. We help identify, analyze and mitigate risks so that the UNT community can freely pursue opportunities for growth and advancement. Our staff members also work to identify, protect and conserve university resources from loss. To achieve our goals, we work together with the UNT community to help them proactively manage risks, implement preventative measures, plan for their challenges and work through any issues that occur.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for combining professional judgment and technical expertise to support the Occupational Safety Program Manager with identifying, analyzing and controlling hazards to ensure the health safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors on the UNT campus. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, indoor air quality monitoring and compliance issues, work noise evaluations, respirator fit testing, mold consulting, ergonomic evaluations, safety programs for industrial and manufacturing environments.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED equivalent and two (2) years experience in Occupational Safety practices involving federal, state, city, and external entities. Substitution of education for experience allowed. Must have current Texas Certified Asbestos Inspector.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Strong oral and written communication skills; supervisory skills.
* Ability to substantiate results from reports using spreadsheets and analysis.
* Working knowledge of building construction and layout and ability to read blueprints, schematic drawings, etc. and determine sites for inspection.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety or equivalent field and 2 years experience in Occupational Safety practices involving federal, state, city, and external entities. Substitution of education for experience allowed. Must have or obtain upon employment current Texas Certified Asbestos Inspector.

Job Duties:



  • Oversight of UNT's campus asbestos program.
  • Conducts indoor air quality assessments proactively and in response to employee and student concerns. Conducts routine HVAC system inspections of campus buildings. Provides mold assessment consultation. Provides written documentation of indoor air quality responses.
  • Conducts respirator fit testing in compliance with the Respiratory Protection Program Plan.
  • Ensures safety processes and programs are in place for facilities and academia operations. Ensures safety programs are in place to protect students in industrial/manufacturing environments. Assist in processing Confined Space and High Work permitting for internal and external workers.
  • Utilizes a variety of industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling and analytical equipment and instruments. Performs calibration and routine testing and ensures instruments have recommended O&M, annual manufacture calibrations, and needed repairs.
  • Supports UNT Risk Management's overall scope of operation. Represent RMS on various committee / projects.
  • Assist with implementation and oversight of UNT's campus health and safety program. Ensures internal related policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to. Collaborates with UNT Facilities and UNT System Facilities personnel. Manages partnerships among RMS, multiple campus departments, and external agencies to enhance UNT's industrial hygiene program.
