The surgical health services researcher Postdoctoral Research Associate will work closely with the program PI and faculty in the UNC Center for Surgical Health Services Research ( USHER). USHER is an interdisciplinary group of surgeon-scientists and research faculty that are working together on qualitative and quantitative research in the areas of decision analysis, patient reported outcomes, surgical quality safety and performance, precision medicine, health and health care related disparities, and care delivery research, among other topic areas. This post-doctoral position within the Department of Surgery will follow an embedded researcher training model that includes relevant didactics (e.g., courses in grant writing, dissemination and implementation research, quality of care) and experiential training, exposure to health system prioritized competencies (e.g., quality improvement within healthcare setting), and research mentorship. This approach supports the development of high impact research projects with real-world implications and opportunities to present work to local and national audiences as well as in academic journals. Areas of clinical focus include cancer, cardiovascular disease, trauma, and general surgery. There is potential for the post-doc to develop their own extramural funding for research priorities in-line with the overarching mission of USHER.

PhD in health services research-related field, which could include social sciences, health policy, health economics, information systems, data science, informatics or related field of study .

2 years of experience with either qualitative or quantitative research methodologies with desire to learn/apply both. Relevant experience includes data management, statistical analysis, and fluency in at least one statistical programming language (e.g., R, Stata, SAS) or qualitative research software (e.g., NVIVO, MaxQDA). Demonstrated capacity to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies preferred. Experience applying analytical and statistical methods, including descriptive and inferential statistics and multivariate regression a plus.
