THE POSITION

Are you an organized and motivated self-starter with strong analytical skills and a keen eye for details? If you wish to explore a rewarding career in which you can exercise your accounting skills while providing critical services for the Commonwealth, the Department of Education has an exciting opportunity for you as an Accountant 1. This position allows you to utilize your skills and experience to perform a variety of ongoing accounting assignments associated with selected subsidy administration responsibilities of the Division of Subsidy Administration. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Accountant 1, you will be required to maintain a working knowledge of appropriate finance-related sections of the "Pennsylvania Public School Code of 1949", additional relevant laws, as well as the "Manual of Accounting and Financial Reporting for Pennsylvania Public Schools", as they affect day-to-day functions of this position. You will be responsible for reviewing current year invoices, prior year reconciliations, and supporting documentation submitted by charter schools to confirm the required information has been provided. Work involves updating and maintaining comprehensive business maps; leading and coordinating the process of filing charter school redirection requests; as well as completing special requests and analyzing charter school data. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the secondary contact for external inquiries associated with charter school issues
  • Creating a variety of spreadsheets to track key division topics and to calculate subsidy deduction amounts to ensure proper accounting
  • Attending meetings
  • Formally presenting information regarding charter school invoices and reconciliations to charter schools and school district staff
  • Acting as the back-up for select division clerical duties

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. You will be required to report in-office every other Wednesday. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Commonwealth's Accounting Intern Program.
  • One year as a Financial Programs Trainee.
  • One year as a Fiscal Technician, and fifteen college credits in accounting;
  • Five years of Bookkeeping experience and fifteen college credits in accounting;
  • A Bachelor's Degree including or supplemented by fifteen credits in accounting.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
